Drexel vs EVMS vs Temple

This is a preference decision, give us some more to work with otherwise you'll get responses based on everyone's personal tastes that likely don't match yours.

Well there's things I like about all three schools. Cost really isn't a factor in the decision, since they're all around the same amount (with Temple being the most expensive).

I do like the Norfolk area more than Philadelphia, especially Temple's location.

But, I prefer the more integrated curriculum at both Temple and Drexel rather than the more traditional curriculum at EVMS.

I walked away from my interviews at both Temple and EVMS feeling pumped about the school, facilities, and the students that I met, not quite as much at Drexel.

Basically I'm looking for opinions from people on the schools themselves that might help me make a decision...

Much better 👍. I'll speak for EVMS (I know a little about Temple, nothing about Drexel). The Norfolk area is great, especially the area around the hospital - it has a thriving young population that has a variety of jobs. It'll be awesome to live around people your own age. Plus, the beach is about 30 minutes away - and it is awesome in the summer to walk along the boardwalk.

I too enjoyed quite a bit about EVMS with regards to the facilities and the students. Keep in mind that they are building a whole new building for the medical school, and I believe that they are reworking the curriculum (at many schools, the curriculum changes each year to respond to perceived strengths and weaknesses).

You also won't be lacking your share of patients either - both Norfolk General (the area's only Level 1 trauma and burn center, and has a swanky new Heart Hospital!!) and CHKD have a wide variety of cases and the like. Also, since none of the hospitals are major research institutions (think UVA hospital) associated with universities, there is a HUGE degree of emphasis and access for medical students at EVMS. Really quite special, if you ask me.

I'm sure others can speak about Drexel and Temple's strengths, good luck!

Here's some reasons why I like Drexel:

1. Technology

Drexel is known for its technological focus, and the medical school is no different. There's wireless everywhere. Lecture halls, cafeteria, library, gross lab, bathroom, everywhere. All the lectures are recorded on video and available online soon afterward. This includes the audio/video, the powerpoint slides, and the lecture notes. You never have to go to class if you don't want to (besides occasional mandatory events).

2. Curriculum

Two to choose from, based on your particular learning styles. IFM is traditional lecture-based, and PIL is taught in small groups for those who would prefer more interactive learning.

The IFM material is broken into modules that are SYMPTOM-based. This is pretty unique, and provides a context for what's being taught. For example, in the "Muscle Weakness" module, during biochem you'll learn bout ATP production; in Physio you'll learn about action potentials and muscle contractions; in Genetics you'll learn about muscular diseases, in Gross and Micro you'll look at nerves, muscles, etc.; and in Nutrition you'll learn about dietary components essential to these processes. Many people like it because, despite how seemingly unimportant the material may be to the actual practice of medicine, everything can be traced back to the central medical idea.

3. Faculty

Everyone is ridiculously nice and goes out of their way to help you out if you have questions.

4. Location

You get the city life without the city hassles like where to park your car, traffic, etc. The East Falls neighborhood is very nice and quite safe. You've got scenic Kelly Dr. for running/biking along the river and you're right smack-dab in Fairmount Park for all your other outdoorsy desires.

5. Brand New 25,000 sq. ft. Med School Expansion

The addition will be completed by August and include a state-of-the-art simulation center along with new standardized patient encounter rooms and archives.
