Drinks in the OR

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The chief of my dept gave me the stink eye just for walking down the OR halls with mine in a completely sealed Starbucks mug. This was before any cases had started.

Next day, he sees me near the OR halls, says, "Didn't I tell you about that!", even though I was heading to drop it off in the Pre-op kitchen.

Next week, my attending pokes his head into my room to check on things, open coffee cup in hand.

Guess I should have waited longer than July of my CA-1 year to carry my coffee.

The circulator nazis would never let any drink of any kind in the OR. They would FREAK OUT. Gotta love academics.

We've just been informed of a pending crackdown on wearing scrubs home, wearing visible T shirts underscrubs, having jewelry/hair uncovered by caps etc. I think someone would have a stroke if we walked into an OR with a cup of coffee.

The main ORs, no drinks. Over at the dental school when they're doing procedures under GA, I can drink water (or whatever) and no one cares. It was really strange the first time, when the anesthesia tech asked me if I wanted anything to drink.

They were doing the t-shirt under scrubs check at my home institution too. Is that unprofessional or pose any health hazards? I can see the drinks policy and jewelery/hair, but can't see why we can't wear a t-shirt under. This is especially important for woman who don't feel comfortable without a shirt under their scrubs.

You can wear shirts under scrubs as long as they aren't visible, if you believe the nurses. Other nursing policy mandates include masks (only 1 RCT exists comparing mask/no mask = no difference), caps and laundering scrubs at home. The CDC/OSHA do not require hospitals to launder their scrubs. So, if you can clean the scrubs at home, I think you can certainly wear them into the hospital.

I Never have any drinks in the OR. Especially a Dunkin' Donuts Turbo (medium coffee w/ 2 shots of espresso). Never. Never. By the way, why is everybody putting coffee covers on their feet and walking around the OR in them? Don't they realize how stupid they look?

I am the leading advocate of the No Shirts Allowed Under Scrubs for Hot Female Nurses and Scrub Techs Under 30 campaign. 👍

i was informed that in ?england?, anesthesia does not wear masks in the OR. i haven't personally substantiated this, but if true, we must be doing something wrong here in the US. anyone else hear of this?

hey proman, do you have a reference for that trial you speak of?

Having just spent a couple of days with JCAHO, even if your hospital doesn't have a policy against, I can pretty much assure you that JCAHO does.

It's true. The Brits have adequate nose hair to filter any particulate matter much more effectively than our common OR mask.

It is actually true and many other European countries do the same because they understand how silly it is to wear a mask when you are no where near the incision while the patient is allowed to breath freely without a mask (If they are not intubated), as if the bacteria in the patient's airway is less harmful than the bacteria in your airway!
Most of these things they make you do are basically rituals based on very little science and they make you do them simply because they can.

They- you mean nurses? I'm appalled! I've never heard of such a thing, holding power and demanding unsubstantiated requests just because you can.

Beware of the particulate matter flying around dental procedures. Bits and pieces of tooth, calculus, gum tissue, amalgam and blood aerosolized everywhere. I usually recommend the anesthesiologist wear mask and eye protection. Definitely no food or drink in the OR for your own protection.

I have always wondered about the mask thing for those not in the operative field. Seems stupid to me but, I think it's just culture.

Some of my attendings have to work alone and on those days its infrequent they get a break for lunch so, they have to take thier lunch into the OR. Of course the nurses try to freak out but, he tells them that he has to eat.

We don't bring drinks into our ORs but, I definitely have a bottle of water stashed in my bag and if I'm on a 14 hour case in the middle of the night where there is no chance of getting a break I take a sip when I need one.

I always have a bottle of soda with a cap on it hiding in my bag. Nobody ever says a word, but I'm not obvious about it, either.

I don't think I'd ever take an uncoverable beverage in the OR. Something might fall in it when you aren't looking.

I walk around all day with either a cup of tea or coffee in and out of the OR....No one says any thing.

Don't get too excited Jet. I'm not talking about patron marg's in the OR.

Coffee! Do you do it? Covered or not? Does your hospital have a policy one way or another?

Yeah, I gathered that, my friend.

But I've gotta confession to make......from my former self.... since I've quit DA COPENHAGEN

Never been a big fan of drinks in the OR......at least the rooms....not really "against", just never did it....

back in the day, though,

CRNA would be stranded in the heart room on pump....

I'd be idle so would pop into the room and say "Dude get outta here for a while. Take my beeper....if something bad happens COME BACK....if not I'll see you in thirty minutes."

BUT

I'd be in the heart room wittha biggold dippa Copenhagen.

Annda clandestine DIP CUP in my pocket.

Guess that fits as a drink in the OR.

God willing, though, you never drink from my "drink" in the OR.

Wouldnt say I've quit forever.

Just realized it wasnt the smartest thing to be doing on a regular basis, so about 4 months ago I stopped.

Still think about A NICE BIG DIPPA COP!

Not overwhelming enough though to replicate my previous use.

So I'll reserve the right to pull outta can every once in a while....

And put inna dip....

I'll covet those times, too.

Maybe it'll be at a poker table.....

Maybe it'll be tomorrow....

I dunno.....

Well I quit the BEAR a long time ago but I still think about packing a fat burl all the time. I jst got tired of spitting out part of the inside of my lip in the shower every morning. Once I quit I could never go back because as soon as I had that first dip I would be back on the train again just like chris rock when he fired up that crack pipe in new jack city all those years ago. Whn one of my buddies is hangin a dip I do like to open up the can and take a long nice inhalation of all the fumes.
