So I'm in a comparative vertebrate anatomy class (that I only registered for to fulfill a requirement of some dschools I applied to), and I am thinking of dropping it. It is a ton of material (my TA himself says not to bother taking the class if you don't have to, because its insane), and I am just hard pressed to find how dissecting sharks and salamanders is relevant to what I am interested in- that is, HUMAN anatomy. Problem is, its already in AADSAS under planned courses...I don't need it to graduate, or for the ds I'm attending, so it shouldn't look too bad if I just get rid of it, right? I have pretty much already convinced myself to drop it, I am just wondering if anyone has any good reasons to make me change my mind.

Thanks! 😀

I'm in this situation too.
Taking a sociology class just for Michgan. I don't need that class to graduate and the school I'm holding a position do not require socio.
I had michigan interview back in Oct. heard nothing since..so I'm just waiting and registered for this class just for Mich.
If I give up on michigan, there's no point taking socio.🙁
But i have that in planned coursework..
can I drop it? do other schools care?

depends on the school, but unfortunately, you are obligated to finish the planned coursework. Both schools that accepted me said explicitly (either on the acceptance letter itself or via a phone call) that if you have it listed, you must complete it, or you must call the dean of admissions to discuss it.
good luck!

Boo...guess I'll get in contact with admissions

I did the academic update to notify the school of my fall grades and the change in coursework. But I guess I'm going to have to call them as well just to be safe.
However, I don't think it should be a problem as long as you complete the pre-reqs and will still graduate. They should understand that we can't be sure of the classes we will take in the spring semester when we apply in the early summer (ie "planned" coursework).

EDIT: If you are wondering I exchanged two gen ed classes for a chem class and a gym class.

Yeah, I completely forgot about updating planned courses before I submitted the academic update (I just included fall grades). I already have 5 of those 7 advanced bio classes Nova lists on the website (where it says take at least 2 of these...), so I really feel like I am wasting my time with such an energy/time-consuming class that doesn't have much relevance or isn't very helpful for dental school. It's a 4 credit course which would drop me to 11 credit hours (below full-time), so I will probably bump it back up with an extra credit hour of research. Hopefully they'll understand...we'll see!

BTW, who are you going to call to ask? Sue?

did it turn out to be a problem for you guys? I hope i don't get my offer retracted just because of some stupid elective course that I didn't really plan on taking in the first place.

i totally forgot that i had changed my planned coursework in the beginning of fall last year since i submitted in the summer....

i dropped some random elective that I didn't need for my degree but forgot to tell the schools.

I updated this change in my AADSAS academic update so I hope it's not a problem.

can you please let me know what happened in your case?

for anyone wondering about this issue, i just called the school i'm planning on attending and they said as long as it is not a pre-requisite course, it is not a problem.

phew 🙂

No problem here either. I had to switch some classes due to a time conflict caused by a changed class time.
Anyway, I though I would be fine since I already finished all the prereqs and many of the recommended advanced science courses.

I emailed someone, but it was probably the wrong person because I haven't heard back. Did you call? If so, who did you speak to? Do you think it would be necessary for me to call too and explain my specific situation about dropping a class, even if I too have all the prereqs and most of the recommended science courses done?

I called the admissions (954-262-1101) and asked to be transferred to dental admissions. I think I spoke to Datie 😕 (or something similar). I called several times before I got anyone on the line.
I would tell you to call and ask since you turned in the academic update already. I think you will be fine, but this way you avoid any possible complication.
