drug comparison resources

what is the "golden standard" reference when comparing different drugs and their effectiveness? For example, I am trying to find clinical evidence comparisons between aricept & exelon. Another example would be trying to find the difference between crestor, lipitor, and zocor. thank you

Clinical studies.... Aricept is preferred but monitored for side effects. Lexicomp says crestor is number one

so you recommend lexi comp, any others? My school has a bunch of resources, lexi comp is not one of them?

You go to pharmacy school but don't have access to LexiComp? I doubt it.

Head-to-head clinical trials (when you can find them) are the gold standard. Guidelines are a close second.

the book version of lexi has tables in it that often compare drugs, however as my clean-up man just said, clinical head to head are the best and guidelines a 2nd. I would always read with a grain of salt, evidence based medicine is a great resource but it never replaces clinical judgement and a quick thinking mind.

thank you for your responses. Lexi comp is not available via our school database. I have the new 2009/10 lexi comp book but it is at work and I dont have access to it until Thursday. Some of the resources available on our school's website are:

-FIRSTconsult
-Harrison's Online
-MDconsult
-Clinical Evidence (which I couldnt find anything)

If you're looking for a drug information guide from that list, Micromedex would be your best bet. It won't, on the other hand, give you many drug-to-drug comparisons (especially among different classes).

Clinical Evidence will summarize the literature out there for you.

Your school should have access to Medline and multiple journals. Search for the guidelines that are out there.
