drug interference with DNA replication

if a drug interferes with replication, apparently the cell cycle would arrest in S phase..
i dont really understand this though --> wouldnt the cell actually arrest in G1, because a checkpoint would prevent it from entering S?
 
DNA replication only occurs in the S "synthesis" Phase, as it preps for mitosis. In the other phases, (g1 and g2), the organelles are being synthesized using cell machinery
