drug testing for residency

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
dont you know that the field of medicine has some of the highest rates of substance abuse, alcoholism, and divorce?

Why would you need to know when is the next drug test, they are not gonna tell you. The surprise element is very important in this kind of tests!!

obviously you did not read the question...try again

I was tested before internship in Brooklyn, and again before residency in Chicago. Both places gave advance notice...both urine tests.

I had to give a blood and urine sample but they did not say that there was going to be a drug screen. I am not a drug abuser, but I might have come into 'contact' with some green stuff.
Don't they have to tell you that they will be running a drug screen?

Were you a former president who didn't "inhale" or "have sex with that woman?"

Just curious.

And yes, they can detect metabolites in both urine and blood and mixed samples too. And other body tissues as well. And the poppy seed on my bun theory won't work either. The differences can be detected and confirmed.

Residencies can do pretty much anything they want and you'll gladly do it if you want to stay in the program, including unannounced drug tests.

basically what i am asking is:
i gave a urine and blood sample...do they need to inform me that they will be using those samples for a drug screen? dont i need to sign a consent for drug screen and fill out a form listing the medications that i take? also i gave a urine sample in a bathroom by myself without supervision. i understand that i will be subjected to random drug tests while in residency

 I think they would trust a future doc to be able to piss in a cup by himself. I mean you are not a felon of any sort and they probably don't suspect that you use drugs. I am sure it's just some random stuff they do.

BTW, I wonder what will they do if you test positive for some hash?

1. Carefully read your GME handbook. It will disclose whether random testing is part of the program. There are state and federal laws that regulate this dislosure, where State law primarily controls the ability of public vs private institutions to do this.

2. Most drug screening is done via urine. The most common is a 10 panel tox screen. Marijuana is lipid soluble and can be detected for a couple weeks (search Google for details if you wish)

3. Unless you are being monitored for a reason, I would not be concerned with the tests. In regards to whether they need you to sign a form.......That is in your GME paperwork, and may have been part of your contract you signed.

4. What if you test positive for marijuana? Don't ask on a forum. If, like you said, this was because you were around some people that were doing this, then that's what you say. Maybe you were at a concert. Don't worry about it.

Welcome to being a doctor. Responsibility, accountability, availablity, affability and ability.

Other info:
1. They do NOT need to inform you that those samples are being used for that, unless there is a specific clause in the state law. Search Google.
2. No consent form needed if it is part of the contract/forms you signed with GME.
3. OSEH forms you filled out upon entering residency have your medications on file. These forms have fine print asking you to report changes.
If there is a question, then you can later provide your list of medications, if they changed.
4. No supervision is required. If you are being monitored for a reason, then that could included supervision, "chain-of-custody", etc.

Hope this helps

I am a traveling health care professional. As such, I get drug tested whenever I change assignments.

To my knowledge, you do not have to have a signed consent to test for drugs. In most cases, somewhere buried in the paperwork of most HCPs is a blanket statement that you can and will be drug tested at the employers/schools request. I have never signed a specific consent for drug testing.

They do generally tell you whether they are testing for drugs and/or alcohol.

They do not necessarily get a list of meds that you are on upfront. This was a bit of a problem, for me once. I applied for a job, 500 miles away, after having had bronchitis....I had been on codeine cough medicine. I knew plainly that I would test positive and wanted to provide the med bottle up front while I was at the site. They declined to take the info at the time, it came up positive (no kidding) and then they wanted a copy of the script (if I am taking the med, obviously the script has been filled and I probably don't have a copy. I had to send a note from my MD verifying legitimate use.

While they regulate how the specimen is collected (much leave belongings outside of BR, cannot run water while collecting specimen, you must wash your hands before, in the collectors presence, etc., I have never had to be observed for the actual voiding of the sample.

These days, virtually anyone that works in most hospitals will be drug tested, from the housekeeping staff up.
