Does anyone have any experience working with Duane Reade or New York City pharmacy in general? It has always been a dream of mine to move there.

What, if any, are the main differences working as a pharmacist in a large city such as New York compared to rural or suburban settings. (other than the patients, of course)

What's bad about Duane Reade octopus? I'm asking because i'm thinking of going to NYC also and i'm hoping to do some rotations there at some retail pharmacy locations.

Its always been a secret dream of mine to live in New York City as well..

but I hear new york city people are really rude 🙄 .. its bad enough working in a pharmacy dealing with regular rude people, I can't imagine working for impatient not afraid to call you out new yorkers..

maybe I'm just stereotyping??

i don't know. i had a real witch come in to my pharmacy on the west coast from NY and she was awful. Her insurance was down (Jan. 1st, go figure) and she NEEDED the Risperdal and was going on an on loudly with her mother about how we are so incompetent and her insurance works fine in NY, blah blah blah. I wanted to tell her, well, get if filled in NY. But really, It all started when she tried to bring in the CII written in NY, of course, and we told her we had to verify, but doc not in office at 10 am on New Year's day. Then she had a meltdown when her insurance wasn't working for the Risperdal. Ended up giving her $50 worth of the med no charge (that's how many she needed for 3 days 😱 ) and she still complained as she walked out the door.

This was my 1st encounter of a rude New Yorker in the pharmacy. I am sure there are nice ones and I just didn't know they were from NY, but she was a piece of work

If you have got an offer from Duane Reade decline. In NY Duane Reade chain is considered the lowest of the lowest. I have never personally worked in DR (Rite Aid and CVS only), but I have enough friends who have. All of them hated the experience. I was told by several professors at school that DR is a bad place to work at. Some of the fellow students had experiential visits at DR pharmacies. Those who were unfortunate enough to visit DR, were complaining that it is the dirtiest, smallest, least organized pharmacies ever.

Ditto - I'm in Ga and got to deal with a New Yorker on New Year's Day - this person told me three times in less than 5 minutes that he needed the bottle back (still had capsules in it). I'm thinking to myself - do I look stupid? Do you really need to tell me this three times? Then, after we had finished up and he had walked away, he had another question, came back, leaned over the counter right in front of another customer that I was helping and shouted out his question to me. You could pay me 500K a year and I would not move to New York.
