I'm having a hard time deciding between UPenn and Duke. My major is bioengineering/biomedcial engineering but I'm pretty sure I want to go premed. I've visited both campuses and think I'll probably enjoy my experience more at Penn, but can't help but worry that my chances to med school would be a lot smaller if I choose it over Duke.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had to make the exact same decision 4 years ago and I chose Duke. Based on the experience that I had there and the people that I met, I would do it again. The opportunities are all there and, as any other place, your experience is what you make it. Kay Singer, the pre med advisor is very helpful and an awesome person and she is unbelievably efficient when it comes down to applying to medical school. The BME major, however, is very demanding and a lot of people end up transfering into Trinity College and majoring in Bio or Chem. However, I have friends who have successfully completed it and were very happy about it. Durham is a MUCH smaller city and there is a lot less to do than in Philadelphia (I work at UPenn now, so I have lived in both places), on the other hand, I still feel that Duke (maybe because of size or perhaps bball) has more of a campus feel, more people live on campus and socialize on campus vs. at Penn where most live off campus. I remember that being the decisive factor for me. One more thing, I don't think that you should worry about your chances of getting into medical school at this point - I think that on that item the schools are pretty much equal and it really wouldn't make a difference in the outcome. I don't know much about the process at Penn but Duke has (as I mentioned before) an awesome advisor and excellent programs at Duke hospital (volunteering and shadowing - HCIP). Good luck with your decision! I think you will be satisfied either way!

Nepenthe,

First of all, I went to duke for undergrad and loved every second of it so I could never discourage anyone from going there. That being said, if you liked UPenn better, then go there. Which one you go to will have no effect on your med school application. They're both top 10 schools and very well regarded in the medical community. Both have great hospitals and lots of opportunities for research. I don't know how the engineering departments compare but I do know that duke has been throwing a ton of money into theirs lately and just built some new bioengineering building or something (I haven't seen it yet though). Also keep in mind that most people who start out premed, don't end up that way and you may not even graduate with a engineering degree. You may find something you like even better.

In short, go to whichever one felt like home to you. In the eyes of medical admissions committees, there's no difference. The difference will be in how you use your opportunities at each school and you'll definitely do more where you're happier. If you have any questions about duke, feel free to PM me and I'll give you any answers I can.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I think I'm leaning towards Penn now, but still am not 100% sure. Anyone else want to lend me their advice?

*sigh*
advice? please. let's see. hm. ivy league vs. just as good as an ivy league.

come ON. go where you think you'll be happier. worry about med school later, like when you're not 18. people from bent armpit state university get into med school. and guess what, they get into good med schools, too.

I (like ccCrazie) LOVED every minute of Duke! I wouldn't trade it for the world, and anyone who's a Dukie can tell you just how proud they are to be one. Duke's pre-med application process is one of the BEST in the country. In fact many medical schools say that MIT and Duke have THE best (several of the schools I applied to told me this). ccCrazie is right though. Anywhere you go will have a pre-med program. And, either school's pre-med program will frustrate the hell out of you because that's what pre-med is all about. You have to go to the school that will be better for you overall (ie location, party scene, advancements, research money, alumni money, etc.)

In fact, there are really two things you need to be concerned with:

1) If you like a smaller city with 60-70 degree temperatures in December and beginning again at the end of February/beginning of March, go to Duke. If you want to freeze for most of the year in a big city, go to Penn.

2) Do you want to go to the school that's going to win it's fourth NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship next year? If yes, go to Duke.

GO DUKE!

ccCrazie, where are you headed next year?

DukeBluDevl02,

I'm not sure where I'm going yet. As of now I'm going to UVa, but if I can get off the Yale Waiting List then I'm headed up there. Overall it was a very disappointing application process but if I get into Yale I'll still be very happy with the end result. UVa is a great school and all, and I love Charlottesville, but it definitely wasn't in the top half of my choices for med schools I applied to. I shot too high I guess. What about you? Where you headed?

umm.... WTF. I believe your decision should involve your own identification with the school. I don't think it is at all important to worry about comparing premedical studies right now, if you haven't even begun any college studies yet.

At this point you are just as likely enter a field in liberal arts, zoology, studio art, exercise science, as you are to enter into a field of medicine. This is why I think you should evaluate the school based upon their whole package.

hmm... i went to duke, so here's what i think about duke.

1) good place to do premed- dean singer (premed advisor) is awesome! it doesn't have the competitive feel, tho premed classes are still tough

2) Duke administration SUX! they try to squeeze every dime outta ya!

3) Minority life at duke is not so good. So if u're white, fraternity bound, then duke is the place for you. But if u're not into the "mainstream" culture, then make sure Duke has what u want-this is serious

4) BME here is tough.. BME+premed = doable, but really demanding

5) durham is NOT close to any major cities on the east coast. DC is 5 hrs, NYC = 8-9 hrs, philly = 7 hrs.

6) BBall is the best

I visited Penn for med school are really like it. Personally i like the feel of a city. If i had the choice for undergard, i would've chosen penn.
🙂

Hmmm.... tough call. Have you consulted your Magic 8 Ball yet?

Seriously, go to wherever you think you'll be happiest. I went to my state school, completely screwed off my first semester, and didn't even really decide to go premed until after my sophomore year, and I got in. If you're this worried already, you're going to give yourself an ulcer by the time you turn 21, and that will definately interfere with that glorious night of binge drinking. 😀

Relax, and have fun. 😉
