Questions, answers, etc.. just thought i'd start a thread solely on Duke so we won't have to weed thru other posts, threads, etc to find info.. sooo...if anyone is waiting for or has received the Duke secondary...POST HERE!! 😀

Although I posed it on another thread...I received a secondary from Duke early this morning.

I'm all about any school who has a devil as their mascot!

Best of luck

is duke a numbers *****? I mulling over whether i should apply.

For my own curiosity...what are Duke's ranges of number whorery?

Submitted to amcas: 7/26/04
Processed: 8/5/04
Transcripts submitted: 7/14/04

wow...I submitted 7/18/04, processed 8/2/04, and I go to Duke, and I didn't get their secondary yet 🙁

Don't worry...they're probably taking extra time polishing up the seat they'll have for you 😀

Since Duke doesn't screen, it's probably just an alphabetical thing

Duke doesn't screen? I heard elsewhere it does... 😕

seriously I was processed almost a month ago and didn't get a duke secondary yet

Someone on another thread just posted that they do...basically, I'm not sure, but I know in the secondary email they ask that students with a gpa below 3.2 reconsider submitting...so perhaps that implies that they want applicants to self-screen?

best of luck tracking down the answer!

Grades are one thing but two other things you gotta consider:

1.) Your pedigree. While not mandatory your ugrad factors in a lot at this school.
2.) The third year. You need to show that you like how the curriculum is set up. The third year lets you pursue research, MPH, etc. Have a reason for liking it. If you wanna go here this should be obvious but I'm just trying to reinforce it.

I went to F&M...I suppose it has a decent enough reputation. I do, however, have a bunch of research...so who knows. Thanks for the insight though, your points are excellent and well taken. I hadn't considered that when making the statement about the 3.2 gpa thing.

best of luck

Hey Randall and all...

Duke does screen... here is the quote from their site:

" Applications are received by AMCAS from June 15 to November 15. After receiving the application materials from AMCAS, our Admissions Office will review the materials. If your credentials qualify, we will notify you to fill out an on-line supplemental application, which should be returned to us within two weeks (no later than December 1). After reviewing that form, two faculty members will determine whether to proceed with an interview. The earliest we can notify students of acceptance is in February for those entering the following August. "

"July 1-Nov. 1:
Duke receives AMCAS applications; sends supplemental applications to qualified applicants"

I know what I said wasn't extremely helpful....but from looking through the facebook and meeting some......there's a pattern.

thanks for the clarification...maybe my application got mixed in with someone else's...anyone else get a secondary?

best of luck to all

in 2000, duke received 5594 applications and sent out 3705 secondaries (66%).

of those 3705 secondaries, 2493 were completed (67%). in other words, the secondary was hard.

Can I take this to mean that those of us currently w/o a secondary are being screened as we speak? :scared:

So I called Duke's office today and I was like "are secondaries screened or not" and the lady (very nice) was like "no, everyone gets one" and I was like "is that a recent change??" "no, it's been like that for a couple of years" "but your website says only qualified applicants get the secondary"...

her response: "yes, we really should update that soon."

then she said that they hadn't started downloading amcas yet so we could expect secondaries (for those ppl that are verified) late next week.

SO I AM SUPER CONFUSED -- how do ppl already have duke secondaries???

looks like 2 threads going about duke. i got a 2ndary today. stats are decent, but below the average for duke

Does anyone who has already gotten Duke's secondary mind posting the essay questions?
I think a lot of us out here would truly appreciate it.
Thanks 👍

...calming down...

Okay, I called Duke again. The thing is, they're not screening. They're just taking a while to upload all the secondary invite emails since they have so many to send out. It will probably take all weekend before they are done with this.

BTW, the 2 week deadline isn't firm. Take your time with the secondary.

here are the "long" essays (limited to 1000 characters)

Outside of the classroom, (i.e., encounters with academic dishonesty, etc.) describe a difficult moral or ethical situation that you have encountered and how you dealt with it. What personal strengths, values, and beliefs helped you deal with or meet this challenge?

The scientific and popular news media have heralded several "life-extending" and ?life-altering? technologies--among which are embryonic stem-cell research, cloning, genetic intervention, and organ transplantation. While such technologies represent remarkable developments and applications of our emerging scientific understanding, these technologies raise critical issues with respect to the ethics, morality and economics of these technologies. Identify some of the critical issues evoked by such technologies and address what potential moral, theological, and ethical questions might arise from the decisions made regarding developing and using these technologies in the care of patients.

I also processed 8/2/04 and I haven't heard anything yet. After reading the list of essays that I have to write for them, they can take their time sending me the secondary!

Just got Duke's secondary...

first one after being processed 8/2/04 🙂

Man...these essays are like the flies in my soup...

Duke? Duke? Earth to Duke? Where are you?

Anyone else applying to Duke MSTP? They have a weird question there than I'm not sure what it means. The questions is: "To what other MSTP programs are you applying?"
Are they asking which other schools? Cause that would be none of their bussiness, right?
I am confused about this. To my knowledge there is ony one type of MSTP program. I will look further throught the site to see if anyone has posted anything about this but if any of you happen to know anything about this would you please post it here or PM me?

thanks all

i guess they want to know exactly that, to what other mstp programs you are applying to. i guess when they are gonna pay for everything, they want to know who they are going up against for your services.

exactly...I posted the same question in the MSTP forum...check there.

good luck!

So I am applying to MSTP only in like 20 schools. Do they really want to know all schools? Heck for that matter they are up against Harvard and Hopkins too. But that wouldn't mean I'll get in them perse!!! I am afraid they will look at it and say this girl has no confidence or no focus!!! Should I only list a few of them, since they won't have any way of knowing. Unless they all call up each other and ask who's application they have. Who knows!!!

Good luck to you too!

Hands down, Duke secondary is the biggest beast of the secondaries I have seen so far!!!

Oh and to all the people who asked about the secondary screening. I can confirm that they don't screen. Cause on the supplemental application they have a timeline of your application progress and their they have the same exact time and date for recieving my application and sending me an invitation e-mail to fill their secondary. So they obviously can't screen! Unless they can read my entire application in less than a minute which would be a bummer considering all the time we put in those

um yeah...

I applied to med school a few years ago and DUke's was the last secondary I got... it was so long that I didn't even complete it.. this time..i swore to myself that I would...so i need some more secondary energy..cuz like ya'll said...it's definitely a BEAST!!! ummm..but i still haven't received it yet.. i think i'll start writing the essays though.

~LR

Still haven't gotten it and was processed 6/23. Hmmm...

Maybe they gland at your GPA and MCAT scores (since they seem to really like good scores) before they decide when to give you a secondary?! Of course I don't know your stats so I can say that with any confidence.
Or maybe it just depends on the clerk that processes them... maybe some are slower than others

Good luck

i was processed the same day and got the secondary this morning...i'm a Duke graduate though but that makes no difference i'm sure. don't worry it's coming, perhaps it's an alphabetical process or just some arbitrary mailing. in the meantime just start the essays... 🙂

yeah i think it is an alphabetical process because I was verified/processed on 6/9 and still have yet to receive it..sooooo we'll see

I got mine-
stats 3.7, 30S (verbal-6)

I started to work on it... anyone have any insites? There are a bunch of moral questions- I wonder if they look for a certain answer

bump..good luck on 2ndaries everyone!

Woohoo! Duke finally showed up in my inbox this morning (AMCAS processed 7-13, last name near end of alphabet). After Pritzker, I laugh at Duke's measly 1000 character "long" essays.

I got a duke secondary and my amcas is still active; i dont see how they could have gotten any of my numbers. Also, i doubt they would say apply with caution if you have below a 3.2 because they could just weed those apps out when they screen; based on these points i think they dont screen....

In Duke Secondary, the second short essay question is about service acitivities. I am wondering whether those service activities have to be volunteer activities. Can working for a doctor (compensated) be classified under the service acitivity category?

Thanks. 🙂

I would think probably not, just because compensation was involved. But, don't take my word for granted because we are all gonna be doctors and in the service business, and get money for it. But my initial feeling is that, no, it doesn't count.

Are the character limits on the short essays and long essays really 500 (excluding spaces) and 1000 (excluding spaces), respectively? Although I welcome the short responses, and can certainly discipline myself to provide brief responses, I do feel that the questions provoke longer answers. For example, in the short essay section, one of the essay questions is as follows:

Each student brings strengths and weaknesses to the medical school class. How might your own experiences or lack of experiences, strengths and/or weaknesses, advantages and/or disadvantages contribute to the makeup of next year's class? How have these impacted your personal development and how have they contributed to your preparation for a career in medicine?

Is it really possible to address the scope of this question in 500 characters (excluding spaces)?

Again, if Duke wants brief and to-the-point responses, that is what we will given them, but doesn't this seem a bit incongruous?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, I posted something along the lines of this either on this thread or another Duke thread. I think they screwed it up. The character limits are too short. (I'd rather have it this way, though.)

Has anyone called the admissions office to demystify this character limit issue? If not, I'll put that on my agenda tomorrow and report back the results.
