all i know is, my attending says it's called "the decade at duke." so expect to do a lot of research and spend 10 yrs there. if you want academic administrative positions then duke is the place to go.

Just to clarify, that would be the "Decade with Dave", not the "Decade at Duke". It's in reference to David Sabiston, the former chairman of Surgery.

however it is indeed a 7 year program, so be prepared for the long haul.

dude, to be able to train under dr. sabiston, that'd be worth it. it would be awesome.

Actually, it'd be under Dr. Danny Jacobs @ Duke these days. Brilliant guy! I spent the summer of '95 back in his lab while he was @ the Brigham & he wrote one of my rec letters for surgery. He is so bright its intimidating

I say this in all seriousness - for Danny O. Jacobs, MD, MPH, he has the WORST dentition I have EVER seen in ANY professional. When he talks, it's like down-home, pure gold, but, his teeth are a distraction. I thought it was me, but, apparently, my perception is widespread. For his notoriety and $ (and the Duke dental plan is robust), you would think he'd get them fixed.

I mention this, because, you are absolutely right - he is truly a brilliant man. Moreover, he impressed me as follows: as his resident whined about seeing a patient, he came down from his office, saw the patient before his resident did, put his gloved finger right in the colostomy, and disimpacted the patient. That was the first time I met him - a witty guy!

As far as Dr. Sabiston - up until last year, even after his CVA, he'd still come in to the office one day a week.
