Hey guys, new to the forum!

So I'm working on my associates part time and am currently in the Air Force. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best school for me to get my bachelor's degree. Duke, UNC and NC State are the colleges I'm looking into. I want to find the college that would be best tailored to me. I want to get my bachelors in Biology. With a concentration in either genetics or cell/molecular biology. I'm not sure if it's important but I was been diagnosed with ADD and take medicine for it. Like I said just trying to find the best fit. I'm not too worried about tuition since I have the post 9/11 bill. I just want to find a school with a great environment to work, study and well go to school in. What are the Pros and Cons you guys can give me of the 3? Heres kinda what I've come up with on my own, which isn't too much.

Duke.
I love the campus. I've heard great things about their programs. The students there work together instead of against each other to lead a bad pass classes. And the I heard that the faculty is more curved to you?

UNC.
I haven't heard a ton but what I have is more or less good things. Has awesome programs and a great campus. I've heard mixed thing about of people are happy there. I've heard some don't like the environment there for a few reasons. But that could just be heresay and opinions.

NC State.
While not as prestigious I've heard good things about the environment as their programs. I feel like it would be easier to my pre-meds there but I'm not sure if i would get the most out of it.

Again I'm looking for a school that I can get the most out of in a good environment. I'm not sure if that makes any sense but whatever opinions, advice or overall help you guys could give me would be awesome! Thanks in advance for the help!

Dont go to Duke. If you are a NC resident go to one of the state schools. Save your money for med school.

I will admit I am a bit biased as a UNC alum, but UNC all the way. I would choose it again in a heart beat. There is no other school where you can get the whole package- top rate academics, top rate athletics, a supportive/welcoming student body, and a college town that's a wonderful place to live for 4 years.

Go to the school with the cheapest tuition so the GI bill helps cover most if not all of it then when you enter med school you'll have close to no debt and if you re-up I believe they will cover med school but you have to give back time to the military (I don't know how much though). Either school will give you a good education mainly focus on getting those A's and a high MCAT score. Being a vet will help with your app so there is also that when you apply.

Duke or Chapel Hill, both excelent schools

congratulations on getting accepted!

How would attending a state school vs duke be saving him money? There won't be any out of pocket expenses. VA+Yellow Ribbon. Nothing to it. I don't even know what city duke is in, but i'd go wherever the BAH rate is higher.

Duke is literally one of the most expensive private schools in the country. Do you not know how money works? This isn't rocket science or overly complicated. The GI Bill will pay for all of public in state tuition but there is a max for private schools. The yellow ribbon benefits are not guaranteed and only $5k at Duke (which WONT cover the balance even if he does get it). He will have significant out of pocket expenses at Duke vs UNC or NCSU.

UNC absolutely. It's consistently considered one of the most veteran friendly schools in the country. Thank you for your service, and best of luck.

I don't know anything about the GI / veteran specific concerns but if tuition isn't really an issue I chose Duke over UNC for undergrad and would do it again in a microsecond. I went through the biology department there and loved it - the faculty at Duke are absolutely amazing and that Duke degree will definitely open more doors for you in medicine or otherwise (particularly outside of NC). If the money is too much UNC is a great option too. Personally I would only go to NC state if you want an engineering degree

UNC. I've heard from various sources that they are absolutely incredible for pre-med, and you'll forge a connection to a top medical school as well.
