Dumb Question: Can I use the abbreviation U.S. instead of "United States" in PS?

Like the title of the thread says, this is a really really dumb question. But I'd still like to find out an answer.

Can I use the abbreviation U.S. instead of "United States" in personal statement? Does this matter at all really? Just trying to save word count....haha
 
US is less formal. Go with United States.

I tended to go with naming it once with the full name and then with abbreviations.

But if you are going to abbreviated something, at least do it correctly. It's USA.
 
Please refer to the US by its proper name in the world - "The Great Satan"

And worst case scenario, you can abbreviate the first instance too and again back ~11 characters.
