I was recently accepted into Duquesne University into the Mylan School of Pharmacy.

Has anyone heard any stories about this school? Does anyone on the forum attend this school? How is it?

They told me they weren't accepting anyone that didn't go to Duquesne for pre-pharm. Interesting....

I know its a good school. What are you stats if you don't mind?

It's the weakest school in the region. Not to sound mean, but it's true. I could just tell when I was amongst them during rotations. The Pitt and WVU students always outclassed them. I could have been amongst a bad sample, however.

There was this one GRADUATED pharmacist who worked for a few weeks with my wife at Rite Aid. She didn't pass the Naplex on the first time and was studying up....she turns to my wife and says, "Woah! Did you know that if you change the pH of bllod, you can DIE?!" I can't fathom how a person could graduate from an accredited pharmacy school without knowing that.

I might have just run into some bad examples though. Really, in the grand scheme of things, a PharmD is a PharmD.....

thats true. im a senior in high school, so imma go thru the 0-6 year program if i were to attend the school.

Well if you're going the 0-6 route, I'd definately do it. Its a lot less stressful than having to worry about applying places and pcat scores etc.

Okay to my understanding Duquesne is a 2-4 school. Unless they have exceptions... I also just got accepted there and it goes 2 years then you have to take the PCAT, go to an interview etc. But of course 85 % of their prepharm continue to the professional phase.

so lets see...they wont accept anyone that didn't go there for pre-pharm (I know this as I was told this by their admissions when I was trying to apply), but then they interview their own students? Interesting...how pissed would you be if you go there, and then didn't get in to the Pharmacy program? I would be...

Sorry but I can't be much help as to how good Duquesne is. I can tell you that they have a pretty campus for it being in the middle of Pittsburgh...but other than that, yea, sorry. But hey, you got in! Nothing says you cant go there for pre-pharm and then apply to other schools for Pharmacy as well! I wish I had done this route ( I had been accepted as you were, straight out of high school), but decided not to do it...I think it would have been much less stressful had I gone to Duquesne. Its always a good option, but I would keep other schools in mind as you go through the program.

I know what you are saying b/c the letter said it was a 2-4 year program. But if you look all over the internet it says that it is a 0-6 year program. Even on its own site, its saids how they accept high school kids and they advance with a gpa of 2.5.

But then the letter talks about PCATs and interviews. Imma call the school. If it is a 2-4 year program, I might as well go to a better 2-4 school like University of North Carolina.

I will be attending Dusquene School of Pharmacy this fall 2008. Does anyone have any feedback on the weekend program?

Are you attending the regular PharmD or the weekend? have you heard of anything?

Well talking about 2-4 and 0-6 programs, they're obviously talking about the regular PharmD program.

The weekend program they have is interesting, but you need a Bach. degree for that. What do you plan to do all week long? Work? Study?

I know 6 current Pharmacists who went to Duquesne (it is duquesne, not dusquene) and they are all excellent pharmacists. They all enjoyed Duquesne, but they were all from Pittsburgh and liked the downtown area, so that may have had alot to do with it. The also graduated back in 2002. As for the school itself, any accredited school is gonna teach you everything you need to know and you will get out of it what you put in to it. You need to visit the schools and go with what YOU like and the environment YOU will learn best in. It's gonna be hard work, unless you a rare freak who reads/hears something once and remembers it. If your looking for someone to hold your hand, pick another profession.

Yes I decided to not attend Duquesne. I will be going to Rutgers.

I'll be attending the Weekend Program as well. Orientation is during August 16th-17th. I'm really excited, and will be really happy to be back home. Where are you planning to work during school?

I am in my final advanced rotations after completing the Duquesne weekend Pharm D curriculum. I have had no problem on rotations compared to students from other programs. The weekend set-up made for some long days to get through. I worked weekdays for the 750 intern hours (and the money) and studied evenings/weekends. Classes are scheduled 8-6 Saturday and Sunday. You typically start each weekend with a one- to two-hour exam on the previous weekend (about 16 hours) of material, then sit down and get hit with another 1 credit of material Saturday and Sunday. The 2 years and 11 months went by fast, and I'm getting excellent job offers-clinical and retail. It's like anything else in life--it's what you make it.
Good luck.

I think you misinterpreted what they said on the site. It said, "Strong preference is given to students who start at Duquesne as freshmen in the pre-pharmacy program. Approximately 85% of the professional phase is made-up of Duquesne pre-pharmacy students."

So, they do accept transfer students, but very limited.

Btw, does anyone here attend this college? How do you guys feel this college? I know WVUPharm2007, you don't like it...but anyone else?

I thought this school offered an accelerated program, but I checked the curriculum on their site....and it is for 4 years 😕

Edit: Also, this university offers dorms right?

When I went to the APhA-ASP region 2 MRM, I met some Duquesne students. They said that it's not a 0-6 program anymore.

Hey guys, I was just checking their site and it stated, "Applicants with degrees are not eligible to apply for the traditional Doctor of Pharmacy pathway, but are eligible to apply to our Weekend Doctor of Pharmacy pathway."
