DVD or Regular textbooks

I'll be a D1 at BU and I was wondering which one do you think is better, DVD version or regular textbooks? Thanks

Where can I buy the dvd books, I'm quite interested in purchasing one especially the ones on gross anatomy and physiology. I would much rather have all my books on my laptop for the convenience and searchability.

Can someone tell me which schools have the book on dvd curriculum?

I'm at buffalo and we don't have a choice...we all get the dvd version...Which potentially could be the greatest thing on earth. All I bring to class is my laptop and it makes things a million times easier.. Everything you need for school is in something thats a quarter the size of any anatomy book. Reading from the screen is no problem provided you have a laptop with a decent resolution (which should be no problem if you get the schools laptop). Plus, with our dvd program (vitalbook) you can reference every book you own. If you need to look up something about prognathism, you type in the word and search results from everyone of your books and every figure in your books will appear in a google'esq fashion. Further, you can copy and paste every figure from your dvd into word documents and powerpoints making presentations and handouts simple. AND, you can zoom in on any of those pictures... Honestly, paper is just a waste of time and space.

but in reality..it really depends on what kind of person you are..If you scoff at people who have video ipods and say 'why would you need that'...then maybe the dvd isn't for you..but if you're like me, and can't wait until your cell phone can function as a phone, camera, ipod, video player, keys, and a credit card all in one...then I'd give it a try...or at least find someone who has it and try it out..

I'm also a first year at buffalo, and honestly when i made my decision to come here I was a little nervous about having all of my books on dvd. However, after seeing the med students lugging around books and all...Im glad we don't have them, b/c for most classes we have 3 books, for some more like 7. Lephisto summed everything up..but i just wanted to reiterate how convenient it really is....good luck!

you buy the dvd from the school, I m not sure you can just buy certain books on dvd....besides buffalo, i know san antonio has dvd, and maybe las vegas, as of last year there were about 8 schools that were on the dvd curriculum

UMDNJ also uses DVDs instead of paper-based textbooks...

mississippi uses them. some people can't stand reading from the computer, but i really like it. it is very convenient.

I just looked on the dvd to give correct numbers: for gross we had:6, histo:5, oral histo:4, phys:3, occlusion:8...you get the idea, i would hate to carry around all of these books. One more thing, when a new edition comes out you get it then...like in the middle of the semester of gross a new edition of clinically oriented anatomy came out and we had access to it right away.....why this helps I have no idea, but never the less we had it! 🙂

Yeah I go to BU now and I was a little apprehensive about the DVD thing too when I chose it... but it turned out to be the best thing ever.
You see for the most part when studying for classes you'll look to the lecture notes, and then look to your books for additional background information. For those classes where the books are essential, like Netter's for Anatomy, I also found the DVD to be great because when trying to find a good picture of that one obscure body part all you have to do is put in a search, and you get a list of pictures that have that part labeled.
Plus like its been said before, it's great not having to lug all those books around.
Yeah, and reading from a screen wasn't a problem either, though I think that depends more on the individual. What else? Yeah so it's great... you don't have to make a decision until like the last day of orientation or something, so try and hook up with some people at the school during that time and just ask them what they think - we won't bite. 😀

Sounds like a good idea, but I don't think you're allowed to/can.
