My friend and I are starting at the same med school. I am witholding the school name for privacy issues. Last week, in an effort to celebrate starting his first year, he got carried away with his partying. Anyway, long story short, he was arrested for a DWI, will most likely be found guilty (very high BAC) and will have this on his record for the rest of his life. My question is how will it affect his chances at getting residancy? What impact will this have on his license? Any help will be appreciated. Please no lengthy diatribes on why it is wrong and he shouldn't be a doctor, your'e preaching to the wrong person. I'm merely a messanger. Any help will be appreciated.

it will have a negative impact.

He should talk to a dean. Fess up - they'll do a background check at some point (probably before 3rd year) and they'll find out. It's better that he be forthcoming. The dean will know more than anyone in these forums about how this will impact his career.

Exactly. Most schools have to run background checks on students before their third years because the hospitals students will rotate at require them.

He should try to talk to a traffic lawyer and see if there's some kind of probation that could be possibly worked out to keep a DWI off his record. The chances are slim, but seeing how your friend is coming up for residency--that may be an option he could consider.

I agree. To the OP, definitely get a lawyer to see if he can get probabtion or some other type of punishment. Tell the lawyer about being a medical student and the residency issue also.
Good luck

If it is his first offense (and I do mean FIRST EVER), there is a slim possibility of a deferred sentence. You do some community service, keep your nose clean for 6 months to a year and the charge disappears. It does, however, not bode well for his maturity level.

Ditto the 'go right to the Dean' idea. I would do it immediately to just be straight and not give any appearance that your friend was dragging his b&tt in the honesty department. In other words, promptness will be a plus on his side as well as a very soul searching sort of apology.

We all have done dumb things and thank God we can learn from them ...
