So I am dyslexic, and Im taking my DAT this july without testing accomidations. I feel as if I am making myself uncompetitive towards the schools by asking for testing accomidations and more time on the dat. But the truth is that I seriously need the extra time especially in RC or else I will end up guessing about a third of the questions. At my college every since freshman year Ive had accommodations. For the dat I've really tried to train myself to move faster but how I interpret what I read or being asked is often very different to the actual point of the text.

I wanted to ask everyone for some imput on this. What should I do? have anyone had experience or people they know that are in a situation similar to me?

Thank you very much.

Do the accommodations you have had throughout college show up on a transcript?

ahhhhh one of my sisters was qualified for extra time on her mcat shell be taking but she doesnt know if she wants to do it/use it.....bc she thinks schools will look down on that....but she really needs it/wants to use it. she never had extended time in college or any of that but i dunno.....
if u feel like youll do poorly on the test without it, then use the extra time! everyone learns differently i guess? plus its better to score better with more time, then to not do well with the designated amount of time?

I am not 100% sure about this, but I believe the dental boards don't give special accommodations to anyone for anything.

IMO, its time to train yourself for standardized exams without special accommodations

Learning disabilities are 100% accomodated throughout your education; its discrimination NOT to accomodate learning disabilities. My friend took advantage of this was awarded an extra hour on each section of the DAT (completely unfair, considering she alreay scored 18s and 19s without the accomodation) and absolutely killed it. Hey, if you have the money and time to get a learning disability diagnosed, then I say do it. I wish I could afford it, because it would definitely come in handy.

She ended up getting into dental school, and I completely resent her for it.

An hour on each section?!?! That's a lot.

I knew this guy at my school who got a learning disability diagnosed which was fake. What frustrates me the most is he switched from med to dent probably because his grades weren't good enough. Now he has special accommodations for the DAT... Pretty annoying. He supposedly spent 5k.

Yea I really dont like getting resented for having extra time. This is something I keep extremely secret among classmates and such. Its quite embarrassing because its sort of like admitting that your lower than someone academically. Kinda like putting a limit on yourself.. and did you imply that your also dyslexic by saying you with you could afford it??

As far as right now Ive gotten tested already but in the dat test ive signed up for I did not ask for accommodations. Do you think it can be asked for still? test is july 21

Im sorry youve encountered a fake.. Ive know a couple of fakers at my school too. and if it makes you feel better, they all failed in what theyre going for and switched majors. If they have to fake something to reach their goal, theyre obviously not passionate about their goals and more likely to give up. since he gave up on med school, he will prolly give up on dent too.. a good rule of thumb to spot a faker is to see who goes and advertise about their learning disability alot, they tend to be the fakers. those who are really affected by learning disabilities kind of keep it hidden and to themselves in most cases.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to make light of your situation. I would never hope to be dyslexic so that I can have extra time.

What I meant was that I'm sure I, along with many others, would have learning disabilities if we had enough money to have them officially diagnosed. Like my friends learning disability: she learns better with color, and takes more time to interpret things because she focuses on the details, which clouds her judgement about the overall picture. So that's why she needs extra time.

Umm...last time I checked, that's pretty much everyone's condition.
