Hi all,

Well, I have had absolutely no success talking to the secretaries about shadowing DO's, so I am going to start e-mailing DO's and asking them if I can shadow them, and later ask for a LOR since most schools require a DO letter. Has anyone e-mailed DOs in the past and if so, have you had positive responses? I don't want to annoy them or anything.

Thanks

I had a very positive response the one and only time I e-mailed a DO.

The DO I e-mailed was the program director of a med-peds residency program in one of the largest allopathic hospitals in my state. I explained my situation, where I was in the application process, and asked if I could shadow her. She replied the next day and was very happy I was considering medical school. I wasn't able to shadow her (she was way too busy), but she set me up with someone else to shadow (an MD under her supervision).

Although I didn't get to shadow a DO in that case, the response was very nice and surprising, especially coming from a busy program director. I'm sure you'll find that most DO's are glad to help you out as much as they can. Most DO's won't be annoyed because chances are they've "been there, done that" too.
