E-mailing your #1 choice program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends if you met the chair or not I'd think. For a #1 I would still do it paper and pencil. The fancy stuff from that fancy paper store in the mall. Just means more. Also can't go wrong with a phone call, or quick stop by the dept. Just remember when program rank lists are due and adjust your timing accordingly. Your #1 should be where you most want to be, probably a bit of a "reach" for you, and the place where you want to shine in their eyes on rank day.

do it however you want. it won't matter as far as your ranking goes.

are you sure schools have told me that if I want to go there let them know and they will make sure they rank me high? If not they will assume I don't. So please clarify.

ive heard it matters

Very program dependent, I think. Would matter if they care about being able to say "we only had to go to #x on our rank list to fill!".

it matters and here's why:

If you are trying to decide what girl to ask out for Friday night, and you have two options... who do you call? If they are both cute, and both are fun to talk to, do you call the one that is in love with your best friend? Or do you call the one that told you yesterday she loves spending time with you.

your chances of a fun date are much better with the girl who wants you than with the girl who wants somebody else.

You pick the girl who wants you.

same with residency programs. It's good to be around people who like you.

Tell them you like them.

Interesting analogy, Surfer. Funny enough, I tend to always go for the chick I KNOW I can't get...

I emailed the PD with a pretty thorough email, that is currently in my file, so I think it was at least noticed. I also saw the chief get an email from an applicant the other day and he looked back through the candidates and at least thought about this person, regardless of what happens with the match.
