Greetings all, looks like this may be the best place to get some advice on this. I'm about one year graduated from college, and after working in biotech for a bit I'm considering the health professions as a new direction for my career.
I started out as a civil engineering major, and switched into biology at the end of my second year due to lack of interest or enthusiasm in the engineering field. Unfortunately, my confusion and lack of motivation did some serious damage to my GPA in those first couple years, and I now have a 3.34 Cum. In my spring quarter first year I managed to achieve a D and an F (still feel unclean from that). Most of my calc, phys, and some chem was taken in that period, and I averaged around a C+ for those classes, so the early damage will show up in my BCPM as well. My major GPA is 3.71, so I managed to pull it together later on, also got A,B+,A in my ochem series, A's also in cell bio, physiology, biochem, etc.
So, I obviously have problems with the early GPA, and my BCPM is about on par with total GPA due to the math/phys/gen chem. What is the best way to repair this problem? I have heard about some post-bacc programs that can help you out with pre-reqs as well, since I might need a couple, but this might not bring me up much. I don't think I would care to go the SMP route if it would come to that, perhaps I might have to go consider another health professions field.
Also, is anyone aware of how long a class will be valid as a pre-req after taking it? My first classes have now been taken seven years previous, and I'm curious if I would have to retake them. If I do make up some pre-reqs, would a CC be a viable option? I didn't take the separate ochem lab for the last class in the series, and looks like I might have to retake ochem II on the semester system (joy!).
Whew, that's a lot of text. Hope somebody has some sage advice for me 🙂
