Why do some specialties, such as urology and opthalmology, have a separate match that is earlier in the year than the traditional Match day? Is there a rhyme/reason for it? Or is this done 'just because'?

I hear Derm is an area of more normalcy, and thus they are part of the traditional Match day ;-)
Yes it is part of normal match day. Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, and Urology all used to be Early Match specialties.

Now it's just Ophthalmology and Urology.

So when I don't match Urology I will still have had time to set up a back-up specialty.

People do all the time. They apply for Urology, and Gen Surgery as a backup. Urology is done thru the AUA match, so it's completely separate from the NRMP.

Has anyone ever applied to the urology match and also to something like neurosurg or plastics through the nrmp and then matched urology but stayed in the nrmp match because theyd rather do plastics or neurosurg but were also kinda interested in urology, or does the aua match have something to prevent this (I would think they would)?

That would be a match violation and a good way to lose both matches. It's the same deal with the AOA (DO) match.

It would be a match violation if you matched urology, and then didn't pull out of the NRMP match.

well, it's a good thing for DO students that it's moving to a combined match so they don't have to think about if they could have had something theyd prefer. I guess with uro or ophtho, since they are competitive it is unlikely many people would apply for them while having another specialty they prefer. Though I suppose it wouldn't be out of the question that some would rank them as second-choice specialties were they part of NRMP - 5 people listed neurosurg as a non-first choice specialty this past year. Any reason to think they would all eventually move to nrmp? I would think that would make it easiest for applicants unless there is something i'm missing.

Anybody recently successfully match optho/uro? Is there a thread for them?

Maybe check the Surgical Subspecialties and Ophtho threads?
Good idea. Thanks. I just didn't wanna bother them with 'hey, what are the little things I can do to get interviews?' Was hoping there'd be a match thread of sorts.

I don't think you'd be bothering them. That's what those threads are for to help in the match. They're not Resident-only threads.

urologymatch.com may be a better resource for finding people who matched Uro. There also is a message board, iirc.
