Eastern Virginia Med Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was accepted around Thanksgiving and am now waiting.

Anyone have ideas on housing/areas?

Congrats on getting into EVMS!! I'm an M1 here, feel free to pm me if you have any questions at all about the school or the area or whatever. Congrats again!

I have a question, why EVMS and not UVA?

I chose EVMS because of the pediatric hospital and because I want to be a pediatrician. The faculty really work with you and because the school is small like my undergrad (U. Richmond).

I am a non-traditional student, but wasn't sure medicine was right for me after college. Instead, I joined the army and deployed to Kosovo and the Middle East. While there I got to meet and work with kids - that is what convinced me to pursue medicine.

Convincing enough?

sounds convincing, but would you go to EVMS if you got into UVA? UVA med is also a relatively small school, and has all the oppurtunities offered at EVMS, if not more because of its ranking. Now convince me...(no, really, I need help deciding)

I want to go into pediatrics, but also am interested in the Peds-EM fellowship. EVMS has the only tertiary Peds-EM center in VA and sees the most pediatric cases in the children's ED.

Also, I grew up near the beach and will be less than 10 minutes away.

It is true, EVMS is about 100 per class and UVA is about 140 per class, but I just felt like EVMS's classes would be more cohesive having fewer than 100 students.

I guess that you just have to know what you want from your med school and residency. I know that I want to do peds and probably peds-EM and can do both at EVMS, but not at UVA.

Is anyone else going to Preview week-end at the end of this month?

I'll be there but i havent been accepted yet....im on upper-third waitlist

Am I the only one committed to EVMS, right now?

I am psyched about Preview week-end and have a bunch of questions: apartments, books, etc.

Hello all,

I've just now found this EVMS c/o 2010 forum. I will be at the preview weekend this month too. Hope to hear lots about where I could live. I'm basically committed as well. Are you all showing up Friday evening or Saturday morning?

Going back a few posts regarding why I chose EVMS over UVA. I withdrew from UVA when I got the EVMS acceptance for several other reasons besides what you all already talked about. The class size was a bonus for me, but the main reason was the atmosphere of the schools. It's a quality that's hard to describe, but I just felt it. The students at EVMS were more relaxed and friendly. UVA's students were more cut-throat and seemed like they didn't want to have anything to do with the interviewees IMO. UVA also has a very high MCAT cut off. Although it brings in great students, I really don't want to get caught up in a cut-throat atmosphere with a higher percentage of arrogant students which seems to be correlated to high MCAT scores and some schools. I have several friends who went to undergrad there and hated the atmosphere. I guess I just prefer a school that looks more for well-rounded applicants overall. Even the hospital personnel seemed friendlier at EVMS and the Children's Hospital really sold me because I'm considering Peds too. I would bet I would see a wider variety of cases in Norfolk. EVMS is also about 7K cheaper (I'm in-state) a year which was another bonus because I'm going on loans. I want to get a degree with as little debt as possible. Both schools really are great, EVMS was just the right fit for me!

Hey guys, I didn't apply to EVMS . . . but I have friends in Norfolk and it is a GREAT city. If you go on second look, check out this small bar/restaurant called "Crackers." It is honestly my FAVORITE place to eat in any city. I look forward to visiting Norfolk just to go there 🙂

I am heading down there on Friday morning. Hopefully they tell us some good things. I think they are supposed to tell us some stuff about books, housing, what classes will be like, etc.

Hopefully more of the Class of 2010 will be there!

I'll be there on Friday afternoon and am pretty pumped about it. i wish it were this weekend. where is everyone coming from? me: originally from nc but currently living in nashville.

Military brat, raised mostly in Hampton Roads, now living in Delaware and going to grad school in Philly.

EVMS class of 2010 here.

anyone know where the good places to live are? Me and my fiancee are going to buy a house and don't know where to look as we are both from Colorado.

Murph,

I used to live in the area and know that Great Bridge and Greenbrier (both in Chesapeake) and Ghent/West Ghent (in Norfolk and next to campus) are good places to live. They are safe, reasonably priced (esp. compared to Colorado), and are all relatively close to school (about 5 mins or 5 to 10 miles).

My wife and I are looking for condos in GB/Greenbrier and Ghent. I can't see leaving her for hours, esp. during 3rd and 4th years, by herself in an unsafe area.

Nothing is too far from school, except maybe reasonable places in Virginia Beach. Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News tend to have bad reputations, but do have some nice, safe places if you have both the time and sanity to look that hard for an inexpensive place.

I'm a third year at EVMS and I love it. I turned down UVA to come here- was one of the toughest decisions I've ever made, but turned out to be one of the best. Norfolk is already a nice place (especially if you like the water), and it's improving all the time- lots of development going on around Granby Street and Ghent. Colonial Place and Riverview are nice areas to live but you have to get to know the areas- still a few sketchy pockets here and there. Med school really is what you make of it- don't sweat the "big name" stuff so much... you 'll understand what I mean when you get where I am. Good luck with everything, and have as much fun as you possibly can between now and September! 😉

Shew, the big preview weekend is only a week away and I'm starting to get excited about going. I decided to arrive for Friday afternoon too. It's just not like me to turn down that free dinner that was in the schedule for Friday!! But I think it's really cool that we have a chance to meet with the profs and other students in a social environment before class is getting ready to start.

I've not decided yet, but I was thinking about staying an extra day and looking at apartment areas around the city because I know come August I'm going to make as few trips moving as possible. So it might help to know what the areas actually look like before I start looking for places. Anybody else planning on doing that? If you all find any nice areas feel free to spread the word.

I might have to check out Crackers too if you say it's that good! 😉

Anybody seen the new schedule yet? I got it yesterday. They have the formal on Friday night and the social hour on saturday night.

Does it seem weird to go to the student's formal? We won't even really know anyone there. It seems like our host would be babysitting us.

Now that you mention it I decided to check my e-mail and found it! I think that formal/social hour change was the only thing that flip-flopped. Going to the student's formal does seem kind of like a weird idea. But from previous posts on SDN it looks like most students enjoy it. From the interview, almost every student was so friendly that we'll probably be able to talk to about anybody there. And If nothing else I'm sure that all the prospective students can huddle up in the corner and find something to talk about!!

did anyone figure out what the dress is going to be like at formal on Friday?

Or for everything going on Saturday?

The e-mail from Angela said that our host would be contacting us soon.

I would ask them, but I hope they e-mail soon.

Guys,

I got the following from my host.

Also, if you guys have questions about the area, I can probably answer them. I grew up there, but have been gone for the past 7 years with the Army and grad school. I have missed a few things which have sprung up in the last few years, but know about where to live, COL, etc.

Just FYI.

hey scott

in my opinion i think it'd be good for you to go to the formal. there are 1 a semester and they are fun and well-attended. its actually a semi-formal if that helps on what clothes to wear, last year with was a range from a couple rented tuxs (not many) to suits, to a couple in jeans. but i will be going with my suit and i am almost positive my roommates are too.

as for the rest of the weekend, itis basically wear whatever you feel comfortable in. unless i'm wrong, you are already accepted so you don't need to impress anyone. i go to class in a t-shirt and so that is what i would wear. i'm doing a student panel on saturday though and i may wear a collared shirt for that.

should be a fun weekend, i'll see you friday

Not only did we get all the answers but we finally made it to page 2!!!! WooHoo! 😀

So I have a question. How many of you are bringing family, significant others, etc. to the events on Saturday? It seems like there are a few sessions set up specifically for them. I'm sure there are no hard and fast rules but I was wondering what other people are doing.

Thanks!! 😀

I'm bringing my my mom. The invite said to bring your family and friends and I'd like her to see the school, she'd feel better about me going there.

I was going to bring some family but it appears that might not happen. 🙁 I definitely would if any of them wanted to go!! That was why I didn't sign up for a student host. Just seemed kind of weird to ask for a host if I was going to be bringing family. But if I were you I would bring anybody who wanted to come.

I would bet that most people will have family/sig. others of some kind there on Sat.

Thanks for telling me what y'all are doing... I think my parents are going to meet me there for some of the Saturday stuff, which will be sweet.

Now I have a small problem-- the friend I was going to stay with in Norfolk is going to be out of town at a conference this weekend, which I forgot about because I have early-onset senility. So anyway I wrote to Angie Jung asking if they have any extra student hosts. But if they don't, can any of you guys recommend a hotel in a safe part of town, close to campus? What are you doing for housing over the weekend?

I'm staying with family friends in VA Beach. I know the original Invite e-mail had a list of hotels and the EVMS rate for each. I couldn't begin to tell you which is in a good part of town or closest to EVMS... but none of them seemed particularly bad and Norfolk itself didn't seem like too rough of a town.

The Radisson is less than a mile from school. If you park in the lot, take a right, then an immediate left and you should see a sign for Olney Road.

The Sheraton isn't too far, but much nicer than the Radisson.

I also have no idea about which part of town they are in or how close to campus, but I was looking at the list of hotels in the mailing. I'll probably call one of them tomorrow and try to get the "EVMS rate" that the mailing talked about. I'll probably stay at the Sheraton and if it's full, the Radisson. I wouldn't stay at Tazewell because of all the construction going on around it. That's where I stayed for my interview in October and it was just so hard to get into and out of and sometimes the street would even be blocked. But it was only about 4 minutes from the college. If I would have known that I wouldn't have a family member coming after all, I would have stayed w/a student host. Let me know what the response is from Angie. I might check into that too if there's plenty of hosts left.

edit: I started posted this before seeing what sparkyur said. So now I know how far away the Sheraton and Radisson are as well.

Oh yeah.... hotels with the EVMS rate. I forgot about that. GC, I will let you know what is up with Angie whenever I hear something.

Guess what? I totally have someplace to stay.

I guess Angie forwarded my email to someone who had volunteered to host and she emailed me a few hours ago about staying at her place.

So I would email Angie and if she has someone to take you I am guessing she will just forward your email and then your host will contact you. Hopefully she will write you back if there is no one available and let you know.

Anyway hope that helps!

That's great! Thanks for the info too. But now it does turn out that my dad probably will go after all. I don't even think he wants to spend the day at the school, just do some of the driving and get out of town for the weekend and what not. Making plans is never a good idea when you have a family as wishy-washy as mine. But we'll see how it turns out. Congrats on the room though!

Hi everyone!
I'm an M1 helping out with preview weekend. Y'all should definitely come to the spring fling, its going to be a great time. Everyone is extremely social so you don't need to worry about not knowing people. Its also a great opportunity to meet people that you'll be hanging out with next year so that 1st week of med school doesn't seem as daunting. Dress is semiformal but it really ranges. I guess shirt and tie for guys and girls can really wear whatever, I'll probably be sporting the little black dress. Dress for the rest of the weekend is totally casual, including the progressive that night.

Concerning places to live, there are tons of great areas outside of ghent that are very affordable IMO. I live in Portsmouth about a 10 min drive and rent is about half what I would pay in Ghent. Living walking distance to school does have its perks though. If y'all can think of anymore questions, i'll try to keep checking this thread, if not I'll see everyone Fri/Sat.

P.S. Come to Spring Fling!!!! 🙂

Wish I could make it, but it's kinda a long way from colorado. Let me know how it goes 🙂

That was a rough trip, but I'm here. Can't wait until tomorrow.

😀 😀 😀 😀
Congrats on the safe arrival! Everybody I know always freaks out about safety whether I'm flying or on the interstate. Well, I guess it's about time for me to make the drive over.
I just hope there's good weather this weekend! 😀

It was good to finally meet some of the class of 2010. Hopefully more will join our thread as they discover it.

I had a chance to look around at some of the apartments and condos in Ghent and West Ghent; they look pretty good, but a bit pricey in some sections. I just drove around and took down numbers, visited some condos open houses, and talked to leasing office reps. They seemed to be friendly.

Anyone else?

It was nice meeting a lot of you guys.

I looked at places in Ghent. Ideally if I get off the waitlist early enough and can get the finances to work I'd like to buy a condo and get a roommate. The mortgage payments on a condo for 2 people wouldn't be too much worse than renting, plus i'd recoup a fair bit of the investment at the end...

so I looked at a bunch of those with a realtor from Nancy Chandler. Found a couple that would be nice. Just have a lot of things that need to fall into place before then.

anyone know if EVMS begins taking people off the waitlist before the May 15 drop date?

i had a great time getting to know some of you over the weekend. i don't know about you guys but this weekend got me really excited about getting started next fall. i mean, i love the school, its people, and ghent is a pretty awesome neighborhood. what did everyone else think about it? more excited, less, indifferent?

any know how to get on the waitlist for hague club?

I'm way too excited...

And it's great getting to put faces with the people posting here.

Definatly gonna be living in Ghent. I think you just have to e-mail hte Hague club front office (the info should be in the preview weekend binder)

Call 757-446-5961 or 446-5860 and ask for Carol Ashburne.

1 BR is 555/mo + electricity (608 ft2)
2 BR is 746/mo + electricity (800 ft2)

laundry room on site (lock 24/7 - you get a key)
on site and street parking

I know this crap cause I got on the wait list earlier, but then withdrew because I am gonna live in Ghent instead of on campus.

xraygray said:

I think the only thing that would stop me from going to EVMS is the relative lack of racial/cultural diversity...the students were unbelievably friendly and down to earth, but I just dont see that as a compromise for a multi-ethnic student body. I thought the school was great though and its a nice area
