These are the types of EC that I have right now. I just graduated =]

- Volunteered in a hospital for 2 summers - first summer was on the floor and the second summer was in the ER but did not finish the full 40 hours.
- I have been working as a EMT for an ambulance company for about 3 years now. I work on average 16 hours a week. But lately I haven't been working because of the MCATs and lack of hours. (I'm trying to find a new job right now)
- I worked in a pharmacy as a tech for about 1 year (not sure if that will count as anything though)
- I TA organic chemistry lab for two years while I was in school
- I also start my training for hospice volunteer this Wednesday

I want to shadow some doctors and was wondering what type of doctors should I ask? Family medicine? Emergency medicine? I am interested in surgery but I doubt surgeons will let me shadow them lol

What other EC should I participate in? I have a year to do this. I'm applying in the 2011-2012 cycle.

I would definitely shadow at least one family practice/primary care physician. But you can also shadow any other kind you want. I shadowed a surgeon in his office seeing post-op and pre-op patients, and he let me see a couple surgeries. My husband on the other hand shadowed a surgeon exclusively in the OR, so it's possible.

The hospice thing is really good I think. If you want to throw some other easier ones in there, try Habitat for Humanity for a day or two.

You can probably look around mdapplicants.com and see what other pre-meds are doing to get more ideas. You can click the MDApps link in my profile if you want to see what I've done and the rest of the site.

But remember, it's quality not quantity.
