I plan to apply DO in the 2014 cycle. I was reflecting on my ECs and realized that I only have about 9 to put and they're pretty standard.

  • Volunteer at a hospital as a care extender (will be doing it for about a year and a half by the time I apply, did it right after children's)
  • Volunteer at a children's hospital (did it for about 8 months)
  • Tutoring at a shelter for the abused (will be doing it for over a year when I apply)
  • Shadowed a DO FP (around 20-30 hours), MD peds (10 hours)
  • Research (will start this fall and do it for a year)
  • Lots of charity work through church (About 3 years when I apply)
  • President of a youth group (6 years, started in high school)
  • I will include being in a choir (5 years, started when I was in high school)
  • Photography (hobby for about 3 years)

Between the first two, I should have around 400 or more of volunteering. Since I have about a year left, I was wondering if I should try to do more to fill the app as much as I can. Thanks!

These seem like more than enough. As long as you can talk about them and show how they make you a better person you are set. You might consider doing some more shadowing to ensure a good DO LOR.

It is not always about numbers, though in a few cases they can be impressive. What's important is that you have a lot to talk about regarding your ECs.

Oh okay. Yeah I would like to focus on my current ECs and maybe shadow some more. With that said, I hope to have around a 3.63 for both c and sgpa coming into the app (with a U curve). I should be okay with an average mcat right?
