Anyone thinkin' hard about ECU?? There's a pretty good chance that I'll be rollin' in Greenville this August, and I was wondering who else on SDN is thinkin' about it too.

Anybody have any thoughts about ECU in general? What's the word people?

I thought ECU seemed like a great school when I interviewed there. The professors that interviewed me were awesome, one of them even invites the students from his small group over for dinner a couple of times a semester. All of the students I saw were really excited to be there and had positive things to say about their classmates and the curriculum. Also there is a really nice apartment complex just behind the hospital. The apartments are cool because they have a seperate study and they aren't excessively expensive (like 600 a month). Of course since you will be going to one of the cheapest med schools in the country a little luxury can be afforded! I think the complex is called Treybrooke. Have fun next year, I'm sure you will love it there!

Would you guys consider ECU over UNC at all? People think I'm crazy for even considering ECU over UNC but ECU did seem a liitle more relaxed and more intimate w/ only 72 peeps as opposed to UNC's 180. But people say in terms of residencies, you can do a lot better at UNC since it has a better reputation. What do you guys think?

I'm definitely considering ECU over UNC. UNC's a great school, but with a class size of 72, proximity to the beach, and half the price-tag*, ECU is lookin' real nice.
As for residency competitiveness, it's just like the jump from college-->medical school. Yeah, if you go to a "higher-ranked" school you'll get a slight edge, but it all depends on what you make of those 4 years. I would say that Step 1 scores and Reccomendations mean more than school name when it comes to residencies.

*: I say half the price tag b/c UNC is upping tuition to $8,000+ this year while ECU's rollin' at about $4,000. Plus cost of living is cheaper too.

Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about some of the points that you mentioned like cost, small class size and the benefits that come with small class size like maybe more opportunities to closely interact with faculty and do projects your interested in. I just don't know how to make the final decision. The beach thing is nice but it's not exactly high on my list of things to consider! Are you going to visit both schools again? Let's keep this discussion rolling guys............

😉

If I get into ECU I would really consider over the other schools Ive interviewed at (Drexel, SLU, MCV). THe price is right and I really felt comfortable there. How long did it take you to hear from ECU. I had great interviews there (2/24). And whats the acceptance letter look like.

Hi:

I live in Durham, NC. UNC/ECU would be my first two choices for medical school. Though I am not going to apply anytime soon, I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas about admission critierias at UNC/ECU. Are they looking for anything special?

I am a non-trad. student, working fulltime and taking post-bacc courses at NCSU. I do not have Citizenship but I will have greencard by the time I apply to medical school. I have heard that ECU in particular is very choosy about accepting non-citizens.

Also, I have heard that ECU is pretty good about admitting non-trad. students.

Give me tips on how I can maximize my chances here..either UNC or ECU.

Thanks.
Shahab

I WANT TO GO TO ECU NOW.

I would definetly chose ECU over UNC...I've been in CH for 9 years and need to get out...I love the place, but it's time to go someplace new. And I actually really do want to do rural medicine in NC, so ECU is a great fit for me. I want the small class, I loved the school, the students seemed so happy...I want to go there so bad and if I don't get in will be applying EDP at ECU next year.

Shahab-- as a non-citizen, I'd say your chances at ECU are slim to none. ECU has never accepted anyone who wasn't an NC resident...so I doubt they'll accept someone who isn't a US resident. You can't fault them for this...they were built for the purpose of putting docs in underserved areas of NC and that's what they focus on. Sorry! 🙁

I love ECU and I want to go there so badly!! Who do I have to sell a kidney to to get an acceptance? I wouldn't hold your breath about hearing anything soon, though...I have a friend who just got offered an interview there on Monday, and he's not interviewing until April 10. 🙁

I had a chance to chat with several of the 1st yr ECU students who were really nice. They're all really happy about going to ECU. The class sizes (70ish) are small, and they're all apparently really tight -- the 1st & 2nd years play ultimate frisbee once a week. Greenville is about an hr from the beach, and is a nice place to live according to them. It sounds like a great atmosphere.

Hi Sweet Tea:

Good to hear from you again. Hope everything is jazzy with you.

Actually, I wanted to clarify something. Non U.S citizen doesn't mean one cannot be a U.S resident.

I am waiting to get my greencard. But once I get the greencard, I will become 'U.S Resident'.

In fact, even now, NC State, UNC classifies me as a resident of North Carolina for Tuition purposes. But my understanding is that technically, I will not be considered a resident until I get the greencard. Citizenship is not a requirement.

And with all due respect, I would like to say this. My dedication to serve U.S, or North Carolina is no less than another north carolinian. I came to the U.S 11 years ago, and I do consider this as my home though technically I am not a citizen. I very much love U.S and would want to contribute positively.

Many may not like that - but isn't that how this country came to where we are today?

Unless they require the applicant to be a U.S Citzen, I would think they should consider Greencard holders the same way.

Regards,
Shahab

P.S : Does UNC, ECU require one to be Citizen to be considered for admission? There is a big difference you know. With Greencard, one can practically do anything like a U.S Citizen with exceptions like Job with Dept of Deffense or running for President etc.
