I've gotten accepted to UCDublin and the 5 year program at Edinburgh. I've been trying to weigh out the pros and cons of both but am having a really hard time deciding where to go! Has anyone been in this situation? Any advise is appreciated

what were your deciding factors? Are you entering this fall? i'm from san diego too!

I am not sure how much the Irish economy is affecting the vet school, but I would predict that they will encounter some budget cuts in the next few years. I know it was really bad in Dublin this fall, not sure if the economy is doing any better now.

I LOVED Edinburgh when I visited (but I didn't go to the Easter Bush campus). It's very highly regarded in the UK (you may want to check and see how Dublin compares) and I actually liked how close it was to U of Glasgow. I'm not sure how much reciprocity occurs between the 2 schools, but it's certainly possible. I've read a lot of great things about Edinburgh's program here on SDN, and this seems to be confirmed by what I read elsewhere.

Besides the academic factors such as facilities, size of class and strong offerings in different fields etc, I contacted other students from previous classes to hear their opinions and experiences and got really encouraging feedback. Of course you should consider the extra time and cost that it will take going to Edinburgh.
What school did you go in San Diego?

I went to UCSD, what about you? Are you already attending UCDublin?

I've become obsessed with dick vet school blogs! the school and city look amazing.

If it's a large enough difference in cost, go where it is less expensive, unless you are independently wealthy and don't care. Both schools are accredited and should give you a great education. Congrats and good luck!

I Also went to UCSD and just graduated two days ago so Ill be attending the c/o 2015.

Did you get accepted to the Dublin 5 year program as well, or the 4 year program?

I got into the Dublin 4 year program. Thats what makes the choice difficult.

The difference between 4 years in dublin and 5 years in edinburgh is around $10-15k

I know nothing about the program at Dublin, and I love Edinburgh and the program here. But, for me, an extra year would be a pretty strong determinant. But it's all personally choice, really. I would strongly advise you to look up curriculum for the first few years, and then information about each city. Spend a great deal of time researching each school and asking questions to people who have attended each. I am really enjoying Edinburgh and love the curriculum but I am in the 4 year so I can't speak much for the 5 years. Either way, Edinburgh is a fantastic school and I'm sure Dublin is, too. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I just got back from visiting edinburgh and I LOVE it! Im definitely going there in the fall (I got accepted to glasgow and edinburgh) the new building looks amazing and I liked the city of edinburgh compared to the city of glasow. I don't know much about dublin, but a friend of mine is in her first year there and loves it. She is in the 4 year program there and says it is very intense. Personally I like the 5 year program at edinburgh cause it will give me time to adjust to living abroad without having the intensity of the first year or GEP

I vote for Dublin!!! (Duh :0) Seriously though if you have any questions that will help make ur decision please let me know! I've spent time in both Dublin and Edinburgh and they're both great cities. Despite the Irish economy, UCD is booming, they have tons of construction projects going and are really accommodating to us international students (mostly because they want our money haha). If it were me I'd definitely go with the 4 year program over a 5 just to save money and time (I've waited long enough to get in!!) I don't know much about the Edinburgh curriculum or the school, but I'm sure you'll be happy no matter where you end up. Good luck deciding!!

Glad to hear the vet school is thriving! I will be visiting UCD in June, which I'm super excited for 😎 It was accredited very recently so the facilities ought to be nice (generally a fair bit of remodeling occurs to meet AVMA standards).

I still have a bit of a Scotland obsession, but Ireland is lovely too! I would be more inclined to go for the 5 year in Edinburgh if you are lacking in experience. It gives you significantly more time to gain experience and knowledge about the healthy animal. That said, $10,000 & 1-year of lost salary may be a strong incentive to head to UCD.

Yep the hospital and vet science center was opened in 2002 and the facilities are awesome! Let me know when you're here in June, I'll be around (I'm not going home for the summer since I brought my dog over, so I'll just be hanging out traveling and doing my pre-clinical experiences they require :0)
