Hey everybody, what is the general consensus on applying broadly versus doing EDP at state school. Refer to my stats and let me know what your opinions are. Is applying broadly better, or is EDP the safer choice?

I am not qualified to give advice, but from what I've heard/read, most schools accept approximatelly half of the EDP applicants, and the rest are either put into the general pool or rejected. However, there are certain requirements that need to be met for EDP, such as high MCAT score(varies with school), and gpa. So if lets say 50 people apply through EDP and all of them are above average applicants for the school, however, only half of them are accepted, this does not increase your chance. What I am trying to say is that EDP might not be the best choice, the only pros I see in EDP is that you will know if you are accepted or not fairly early. Your stats are great though, so you may try if you really want to attend this particular school. Good luck🙂

IU's mean acceptance stats are GPA 3.8, which you exceed, and MCAT 31, which you don't. I think you're fine for regular admission, but following the general rule of needing to have numbers well above those of the usual acceptee, you shouldn't take the chance of applying EDP.

Here is a link to a great thread on the subject, discussing pros and cons, including opinions by REL, a known adcomm member: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=521994&highlight=Early%2Bdecision

great advice as usual mobius & others on this subforum...thanks a lot!

I will think long and hard, but it looks like I will do regular decision and apply broadly to IU and some other mid-west schools...

Indeed. Sacrificing 2 prime months of the season to EDP with average-ish stats is not a wise plan. I think you're in good shape for an acceptance if you apply normally, so don't take the chance.

are there ways I can express to iu that I would go there if i was accepted? I.e what is a letter of intent exactly...ive seen people mention that?

If you have a #1 school that you greatly prefer above all others and the school accepts a generous amount EDP (check MSAR or call school) then apply EDP. Some schools have lower stats for their EDP accepts because they feel that the applicant is more committed.

As many others before me have said, your MCAT is a little low but GPA is very high. If I were you I wouldn't apply EDP.
