This goes out to anyone with any interest in protecting the difference between a Nurse and a Doctor. We must educate our patients on who we are, our role as a physician, the nurses role in the case, and they we will ultimately be responsible for their care.
Most patients have no clue who we are and what we do. Some do extensive research before they pick their surgeon, but none when it comes to their anesthesia team.
If we want to protect our profession from the independent practicing nurses is ask one simple question to any patient or their family member "who do you want taking care of you, a nurse or a doctor?"
Everyday we have an opportunity to educate our patients and their family. Take a few minutes to explain to them our role and that we care.
