So I'm a nontraditional student with three options for taking prerequisites.

1. State school that offers classes online and in-person
2. Online prerequisites from a university called Doane University.
3. Community college classes

The state school is enticing because it is a four-year university which is ideal for medical school. However, when looking at the schedule, I noticed that several of the prerequisite courses only meet online. I know that online courses aren't ideal, and that has me concerned.

The online courses sound great because they are convenient and inexpensive. However, as previously mentioned, they are online courses and could be viewed negatively by admissions committees.

The third option is inexpensive. However, based upon prior feedback and research, it seems as though community college prerequisites are viewed negatively. Many of these courses are also only offered online by the school, which seems to make a less-than-ideal situation even worse.

I'm leaning toward the four-year university, although the online sounds nice. What are your thoughts on my situation? Is there anything else that I should be considering? I"m working, trying to find time for EC's, research, and clinical experience as well. Your advice is appreciated. Thank you for your input!

Which prerequisites are online at the state school? Are they always online or is this a temporary COVID restriction?

Do any of these options allow you take the lab classes in-person?

My initial opinion (which you should take with a grain of salt, since I don’t have a lot of information on the specific programs you’re looking at):

4-year in-person or online ONLY due to COVID >>> CC in-person > totally online university (or distance learning option associated with a bricks-and-mortar) = online CC

Hey,

I struggled with the same decision. In the end, I decided to do the in-person schooling. My school was/is not a state school so it was a bit more expensive but it was a better decision. I made my decision based upon the schools that I wanted to apply to. I read their FAQs and their pre-req requirements and based my decision, partially, upon how they viewed my CC courses, online courses, and four-year institution courses. Even if your four year institution courses are online, most of the pre-req labs will probably be in person and your transcripts will not differentiate between which classes were partially online and which classes were in person. Also, brick and mortar is ALWAYS better than online institution at all times.
