Einstein vs. NYU/MSSM? Match lists...

Anybody who's thinking of choosing (or would choose) Einstein over NYU or MSSM? Please share...

(i was looking at the match list for these schools, and they are almost identical! Dr. Kermit, I know you had said that Einstein's residency score is low because of its large number of affiliates and that they can't rank their own... but why would they drop so much in the last couple years if the reputation criteria have stayed pretty much the same??? I just can't understand why their score is so much lower given their strikingly similar match list to the other NY schools...) 😕

I think NYU is higher ranked and has a better rep. Plus, the location is way better. But I'm not a expert on NY schools.

Yeah, I noticed that too... but a couple years ago, Einstein was actually ranked higher than NYU! that's why i am wondering if their reputations are even all that different...

Better ranked by whom? US News? Those rankings are nearly meaningless. If schools didn't move up or down a few slots, there'd be no reason to buy their magazines. Each year, they calculate the rankings in a slightly different way. With such small differences b/w them, you should go to the place that you think you'll have the best time/learning experience at. I think that most honest med students and doctors (I'm a med student now) would agree.

yunfat...i'm holding an acceptance at einstein right now, but I'm waiting to hear back from UCLA still and I'm waitlisted at NYU.

I personally thought AECOM's matchlist is pretty good.

When I went to interview, I learned that the reputation of school contributes less than 20% to getting into competitive residency programs. The rest 80% comes from students themselves.

I'm in the same boat as Mango. Accepted to Einstein, waitlisted at NYU, and waiting to hear from UCSF and UCI.

I don't get into rankings all that much. I like what the above poster said. For me, I liked Einstein's curriculum better, their housing was nicer, and the students seemed less competitive. NYU's location is better, but other than that, not much stood out for me. And if you are into rankings, Einstein is ranked in both primary care and research, while NYU is only ranked in research. That is pretty meaningless to me, though.

Choose the place you'll be happy at..bottom line.

mango, what's your top choice? would you choose NYU over Einstein?

UCLA was one of my top choices... but didn't get any love there... 🙁 hope they treat you better! good luck on those that you are waiting on!

Yunfat, I would choose NYU over Einstein. I think I would be much happier living in the city (I had an awesome time while I was there) and I really liked their curriculum. Also, the students seemed really happy and were really friendly. I don't know why, but I wasn't very impressed with the students at Einstein. But then again, maybe it was just the group of students that I met. I would love to go to UCLA as well, but even after getting an interview it is a VERY long shot for me, so I'm really hoping that NYU will start moving their waitlist soon!!! (oh yah, I'm also waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt, but I don't think I would go there)

Same here, Mango... I am waitlisted by Vanderbilt, but don't think I am going there.

As for the students at Einstein, that's one of the reasons why I like the school! The students I met there were some of the friendliest and most down to earth!!! The competition level was also quite low compared to others... and i was told that the school spends mucho denaro on their students (hey, did you get to see the anatomy lab? i just know it's on the 6th flr with windows... that's it)

anyway, good luck with UCLA...i'll be cheering for you on that one! keep us posted!

Would those of you who've been accepted or waitlisted at NYU please list your stats, i.e. GPAs, prestige of undergrad school, MCAT, significant extracurricular experiences (resume candy <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> ), healthcare experience, research experience, etc.

Thanks a lot. I know it's a pain in the a$$, but I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty sure I want to go D.O., but if there was one allopathic school that changed my mind it would have to be NYU. God, would I love to go there!

I have a million reasons why I liked Einstein and will probably attend that school over Temple, my state school. I could go on and on and poor souljah has already heard me pump up Einstein.

Curriculum- It's straight up P/F first year. Second year, they add honors. Third year, it becomes H/HP/P/LP/F with narrations. I also like that they have organ based learning as opposed to subject based classes second year since that is how the boards are set up.
Location- Yes, I know it's in the Bronx. But, my boyfriend is from Westchester, so I'm pretty much in between both his family's house and their apartment in Manhattan. I'm also going to have a car, so I don't care about driving to get groceries and other necessities.
Amenities- I liked their cheap housing. I'm not thrilled about the roommate factor, but I can deal with it. I've had two horrible roommates, nothing can get worse. I want to stay a fit med student, so I like their athletic facilities.
Opportunities- The school is loaded. They paid for my friend to study abroad and get her MPH at Columbia.

Drawbacks- It's in the Bronx. There's no bookstore, you'll have to drive for food if you don't want Chinese, pasta, or pizza, and it's kind of boring. And, the library and gym are closed on Friday nights. But, oh well, I'll be in Philly or Westchester anyway!

I could go on, but I have to get back to work. Good luck with your decision yunfat. You really shouldn't let ratings effect your decision. Einstein and its affiliates train ~40% of NYC residents (medical residents that is) since they have 8+ large hospitals.

If you don't mind, can you PM me some of the messages you sent to Souljah and others regarding Einstein? I am seriously considering the school, and would really value your input... since most of the people i've talked with seem to favor NYU and others... it'd be nice to have both perspectives...

(like you, i don't really care about the location too much either... since i will also have a car)

After comparing different matchlists online at mcwmd.com it clear that other variables than prestige of school come into play in determining residency match.A number of schools far lower ranked from NYU or Einstein or unranked did very well for residency match.

I applied to NYU, but wasn't offered an interview. I don't know much about the school, but from what my friends have told me, they didn't have a very favorable interview day there. The housing is very crowded and you'll spend your first two years sharing with 2 if not 3 people. Also, they're best clinical training will be Bellevue, but at NYU's own hospital, the patients are mainly upper middle class and tend not to want students caring for them.

The last aspect that turned off my friends was the unstated competition. While NYU is P/F, they do rank their students for Dean's letters fourth year.

I like Einstein for its clinical training. I'm interested in pursuing a public health route/underserved urban medicine. Unfortunately, there are many children in the nation that cannot afford proper healthcare, so I was highly interested in doing my third year at Jacobi. I also like that they offered Clinical Spanish. I'm already well versed in two other languages and found this opportunity appealing.

The students at Einstein seemed genuinely happy. Of course, there were a few who had wanted to attend a school in Manhattan so chose Einstein over another school in hopes of being removed from a waitlist and just having to move into the city. That was my experience during my interview, but I went back in early January and the students I met were awesome. Many of the students that I've met at NYU have a tendency to put down their counterparts (Columbia, Cornell, etc.) It was really a turnoff to hear students talk badly about future colleagues.

I'm still waiting on Sinai and if offered an interview and an admission, that is probably the only other school I would consider than Einstein.

I've talked to two current students (first year and fourth year), my interviewer (who went to NYMC, her husband went to Columbia and now works at Sinai) and a former student (he is now a pediatric attending, but attended Einstein and did his residency there.) All have convinced me that I'm making the right decision and I'm really sold on the school.

I think I may a little biased though b/c I've always had an interest and Einstein and coming into the app cycle, it was one of my top choice schools. (My dream school was Penn 🙂 ) My realistic top choices were Temple and Einstein.

Dr. Kermit...I am also sold on Einstein. I agree with a lot of what you say. I have four other acceptances and Einstein is where I plan to go. The only thing that may stop me is an acceptance to UW, as I am on the wait list. But I want to maybe clarify something in regards to the MPH reference you made stating that Einstein "paid" for your friend to attend. It was not Einstein, but the Macy Foundation, a philantropist organization offering a wide range of scholarships. The Macy Foundation funds 12 students to attend Columbia for the year-long accelerated MPH program for med students. The 12 spots are open for students of the 7 NYC med schools to apply. SOunds competitive, but last year 3 out of 3 Einstein students got in and this year it was 2 out of 6. Just a piece of info., you might already know. As you might have guessed, I too am interested in the public health route. Perhaps I'll see ya in the fall in da Bronx! 😎

I think you're right on the Macy Foundation for the full funding to Columbia, but I know for sure once she got that funding, Einstein gave her room/board for free that year. So, my friend stayed in AE housing w/o paying and attended Colubmia. Sorry, I was confused 🙂 Maybe we'll be classmates for 4-5 years!

I forgot to mention that of all the NYC school, with the exception of Cornell, Einstein has the fewest hours of class. 18-20 baby! The first years I talked to said a typical day is 8-noon, except lab days. And since the school has an Orthodox influence, the buildings must be cleared by sundown on Friday.

Regarding why NYU students bad-mouth other schools, I think that they are somewhat bitter. I know two second years there who would have rather been at Cornell/Columbia/Penn, etc. NYU's entering classes have high numbers (see USnews) and I know for a fact that their financial aid suck big time. So the only reason to go there for many kids is because they did not get into a top 10 school.

I ask cuz I am also a fellow PH person! Epidemiology is my thang... 😀

(Another plus, Einstein actually has a department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine! )

Yunfat...good to hear you're interested in publich health. I think Einstein will be a great place for us who are interested in such areas. Its too bad there is no school of PH at Einstein, esp. with its epidemiology dept. and social medicine angle. International health is where my interests fall, in addition to everything else. Einstein seems like it allows for a lot of travel, esp. with the stipends they offer after the 1st year for travel to developing nations or spanish speaking countries. Rock on...AC 😎

just wondering...coming from the west coast, what made you decide to apply to Einstein, but not NYU??? Do you have family on the east coast?

Yunfat, I've been living in Seattle for almost two years now, but am originally from Connecticut...so NYC is close to home for me. Although I love the Village, I wasn't too interested in NYU. I did apply to Sinai though...haven't heard anything yet, and I don't really care at this point.
