Don't really understand why the answer is C. I put B b/c the curved path would be longer than say if the flight went straight through the earth to New York. Help!

i think you're to take displacement to mean the final vector between start and end. the plane could fly to the moon and then to new york, but the start and end points are the same, so the displacement vector points from start point to end point regardless.
