Hello folks,

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I'm hoping to get advice on where I should do my electives in EM this coming summer. As an IMG from Ireland, and the ever-increasing popularity towards this field, I think my choice of elective location could potentially be very important.

I've been accepted to Georgetown, Emory, and Mayo Clinic Rochester (all 4 weeks) and realistically can only do 2/3.

If there are any current clerks or residents from these programs, I'd really appreciate any feedback on the residency program as well as how far an SLOR from each school could go. In particular, Georgetown's program is very new, so getting information about their program has been sparse. I would love to end up in Washington though 😉

In your opinion, how would you rank these programs??

Thanks!

I was faculty over at GTown for a few years, left in 2008. I think a year after I left they picked up an IMG from Ireland. So maybe there's a door open for you.

I would probably say that as an IMG your goal should be to get great leaders in the EM field to write you kick butt LORs.

Good luck.

Mayo has quite a few IMGs including some from Ireland.

I'm a soon to be fourth year Georgetown student. I've been involved with the EM department since I arrived and I think Georgetown would be a great place to do an away.

Some good advice I received from our EM clerkship advisor, in tandem with that of George Washington.

You're away elective should be less focused on where you really want to match, but rather finding a location that has a reputable EM faculty member who can write a letter for your application. I can tell you Dr. Love, the PD of the Georgetown program is pretty well known, and from what I understand, getting a letter from him goes a long way not only here in DC, but the surrounding region as well. That being said, I know that one of the current PGY-2s went to school in England somewhere (maybe who Q was referring to, not sure).

Three Georgetown students are heading to Emory next year. They all LOVED it there. I know little of the program, as I am from the west and hope to head back there, but supposedly Emory is great too. I wouldn't stress too much over it. DC is a great place to spend 4 weeks though and you would have some great opportunities to do things in the city (for cheap/free) in your little down-time. DC is a public transit-friendly city, though the two hospitals you rotate at during EM are slightly more difficult to access (not directly on metro line)

Being an IMG, rotating at a place that is a target is not a bad idea...its not a bad idea for a non-IMG too.

I currently work at GWU in DC and work with some of the Georgetown faculty. They are really knowledgeable and would be great teachers if you decide to rotate there. DC is a fun city to live in downtown, but is very expensive. Try and stay near the metro train system if you can so you can maximize your rotation if you decide.

I did my residency at Mayo Clinic and have nothing but great things to say about it. You will have a tremendous EM experience there and will work alongside amazing clinicians and educators. The Rochester environment is not a big city and in fact is geared toward low-key fun. I love it, but it is certainly not DC or atlanta.

I have two friends who work within the Emory system and they have enjoyed their time there. The hospitals in their network are certainly quite varied in practice styles and resources. I am not sure of the experience, educators, or anything beyond it.

Good luck in your decisions and have fun in whichever place you choose!

Thank you all for the great advice! I'm really excited to get back to North America and get my felt wet!

Question for Dane07MD and DrQuinn: Any idea about how the rotation works at Georgetown? Would it be be very frowned upon to do three weeks rather than four--its been super hard getting elective dates not to overlap! Is there a formal assessment at the end of 4 weeks??

I know Emory's graduated at least one resident from Ireland. If the rotation is still set up the same as when I was a student, it will offer a good amount of autonomy in a patient population that is ridiculously sick. The didactics and in shift teaching were only so-so.

I do'nt know about setting up the rotation. I would go to the website and hit up the person who does that. I am sure they would understand... but welcome to the pain of scheduling audition rotations.

ANy other questions about GT let me know.

Good luck.
