I'm a PGY-3 and am looking into what to do for my one month elective next year. Does anyone have suggestions? I would be interested in both national/international electives.

Thanks!

I had a killer time with all three of my electives.

First was my 'geriatrics' elective... worked with the geri fellows on all their cases. Maybe not a big deal for you, but I really, really love old people... and where I'm going, there sure are a lot of 'em.

Second was my 'education' elective. Running my mouth to medical/PA/nursing students every day. Teaching in the classroom and at bedside. Loved it.

Third was my 'medicolegal' elective. Learned exactly what to say (and more importantly, what not to say) in every sticky situation.

Just my $ 0.02.

University of Toledo. I'm only two-weeks in to my medicolegal elective, but it is outstanding. - And this is without even enjoying all nights/weekends off. When I used the phraseology "learned what to do" (past tense)... it is to signify that those who completed the rotation before me spilled their learnings to me/(us) afterwards... Wow. We were all stunned.

Depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Education or vacation. One of our prior grads took advantage of a departmental policy that stated if you submitted an abstract/journal publication and had the chance to present it at a conference, they'd fly you to the location and pay for the trip. Rumor is that he submitted it to some almost unheard of journal in Africa and the dept ended up flying him out there to present for a few hours while he went on a safari.

That rule has since been changed...

If anything, we're a creative bunch.
