How does one go about finding hospitals that take third year students for electives? Do you just look at individual hospitals and contact them? Is there some database that helps with this? I'm trying to set up some out of town rotations and am not having much luck by looking at websites.

Your username suggests that you might be a DO student so here is one website where programs list if they take 3rd years and the contact info is right there too:

http://www.opportunities.osteopathic.org/

And here is the residency database for allopathic world with contacts:

https://freida.ama-assn.org/Freida/user/viewProgramSearch.do

I've had good luck when I shoot an email to an administrator (not the program director or department chair) and they are your best source to get information about setting up electives. Both of those sites above will usually list the name/phone/email of an administrator for the program.

Are DO students allowed to do electives at an allopathic program if that program accepts DOs for their residency spots?

EDIT: I mean permitted by the AOA or school or COCA or whoever is in charge of all that jazz.

Yea programs will allow DO students to rotate there, especially if they accept DOs in their program. You just have to sign up through VSAS (https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/vsas/). I have heard some rotations cost a lot of money to apply for.
