hey folks,

anyone out there know of quality electives for EM residents. My elective period is approaching in a couple of months, and I would love to go abroad if possible.

share some stories/links of your experiences.

In general, electives abroad take quite some time to set up. If you have particular interests, I'd follow those with your elective. If not, then try to strengthen any weaknesses you may feel you have. Barring that, just ask your faculty advisor or your colleagues who have done electives at your hospital or nearby.

yeah, i hear that response often.

check out this site, its Christian oriented but has good opportunities...primarily for Med students.

It's harder to find such things available for residents because of the stricter educational requirements of most residency review committees. Almost anything is educational to a 4th year medical student though.

go to:

www.scutwork.com

then go to the EM section

then go to the region where you are located

read what (if any) reviews by students etc for a program you are considering

also read the "top programs" list

hope this helps

If you really want to go abroad, check out the offerings of the Yale-Johnson & Johnson International Health Scholars program.

They will pay for your overseas adventure (up to $5,000 I think). Most are already formed rotations. We are given the option to select one of these rotations or to create our own. By the way, you do NOT need to be a Yale resident to participate in this. I think 1/3 of the resident scholars are non-Yale residents.
