Electric handpieces

Are any students using electric handpieces in school? We will be using them this year at AZ, and I'm wondering which type people have had exposure to and prefer.

Specifically, W & H, KaVo, or ADEC.

I haven't heard of many schools using electric, but I'm hoping some students have had exposure to them.

Being a DS-1 would be a great time to be exposed to electric handpiece. My partner and I got 4 of them this past Fall after I'd been using air turbine for 8 years and my partner for 15 years. The difference in the levels torque does take some getting used to especially if your used to air turbines. Now though that I've been using my Kavo electrics for 8 months, I wish that they had been around alot sooner, not only for the level of performance, but also for the greatly decreased noise levels(patients really appreciate this part). What I really can't wait for is subsequent generations of electric handpieces which should help get the cost down since currently an electric piece will be between 2 to 4 times more expensive than an air turbine 😱 However now that I've been using them, the cost is worth it!

could this technology be leapfrogged by laser? i.e. electric handpieces fail to dominate the market share and cost of lasers going down enough to be competitive... or do these belong in different domains of treatment?

Electric handpieces! Amazing! You'll be experiencing some of the most amazing technological advances being at a brand new school! I'm pumped for ya!

Now I want to try them!! I'll go propose that to the dean first thing tomorrow!

At my state school, I believe we have state-of-the-art belt-driven handpieces. In the syllabus, each of the D1s is assigned a time slot on the treadmills to power these bad boys. 😉

Heh, thanks for your posts everybody. Super, at least you'll be getting a good workout each day!

I'm excited to play around with my new handpiece next week. We'll be using Kavo, and I can't wait.

Dr. Jeff, I'm glad to get exposed to the electric now, because it won't conflict on any exposure I've had to air pieces.

Kavo worked out a sweet deal with our school because they were so excited to see their latest technology implemented in an academic setting.

I'm an european dentist and i almost allways use electric handpieces.I see one advantage for the air , when you practice on an air unit.It fits well .But in my country the great majority use electric.
The advantage is less noisy ( always associate with pain)
less painful because the bur is better grip than air handpieces involving less vibrations
more effective the bur don't change its speed during work
better work ( the last two reasons)
worn less the bur

another point air unit is less expensive and more easily repairable.

I'm assuming if it's electric you could plug it in and practice at home? I'd rather do that than spend all night/weekend in the lab. Get some bracket, pipe from the hardware store and you've got yourself a stick to mount your dentoform. Just don't show your landlord the holes in the wall.
