Hi All,
I was wondering, with a 3.84 GPA as an electrical engineer and premed (I will stay away from the list of EC's and research bla bla bla), is this a respectable GPA for such a major/track combination?

Thanks,
laxtiger

Are you trying to make me feel bad? 🙁

Haha jesus. What do you expect people to say?

no, honestly, not))) it's just that everybody says that your major doesn't matter and so on and so forth, and I should take path of least resistance...what, where you engineering major in college?))

idk, it's my junior year, so i really have only two more semesters that "count" in terms of gpa counted during application season, for example.

People say you get a break for being an engineer. I can't say whether this is the case or not but from anecdotal experience (friends, girlfriend, relatives) would suggest that you do not get a break for having a hard major (I was just a dummy bio major from their perspective yet I got into a "better" school with my perfect GPA and greater breadth of activities made possible by an easier major).

None of this is relevant in your case. Keep up the good work 👍

edit: regarding the anecdote above I should probably mention that some of those people were possibly screened out automatically by a computer. This would be a case when I suppose the major itself doesn't really matter............... when getting past any automated screening based on numbers

I'd say you're in pretty good shape. I was in the same boat as you as a CHE major a year ago w/ around the same gpa (although I'm no longer an engineer now). keep it up! 👍

No way, guy. Everyone knows engineering is easier than the pure sciences (especially biology). You should be pulling a 4.0

come at me

obviously this, wtf OP

EE doesn't even get hard until the 3rd year, unless you just suck at any and all kinds of math (in which case, why would you even major in engineering?). That will be a good GPA if you can keep it throughout your 3rd year, typically the hardest year for EE (for my school, it's usually semiconductor physics, Emag, Analog Circuits etc.)

1. Anything above a 3.7 is above average for most schools, regardless of major.

2. There have been numerous discussions on how much major matters, and there has never been a consensus.

3. The only real advantage your major might provide for you is that it might allow for an interesting conversation during your interview. That is unless for some reason your interviewer is a MD/PhD in engineering. In that case, be prepared to be pimped to hell. I say this because I had a MAE professor (MD/PhD) who used to interview for UNC and he said he loved asking engineering premeds conceptual engineering problems, as did some of his colleagues 🙁.

Because there isn't a universal answer. This varies between schools and even individual application reviewers.

+1. OP is off to a great start - but if they haven't hit the core courses (emag 2, or similar such courses) or even the non-eletrical, engineering requirements [for me it was materials science and statics and dynamics or fluid dynamics] then some caution should be taken.

Then again, you have to take what LaPlace is saying with a grain of salt too - remember s/he is working on a whole different plane. 😛

FWIW I had a 2.8 gpa

Good luck OP

You will be fine, just keep it up 🙂

Hi All,
I was wondering, with a 4.00 GPA as an EE/ME/physics triple major and premed (I will stay away from the extensive list of EC's and first author research bla bla bla), is this a respectable GPA for such a major/track combination?

Thanks,

I think you need to go work on your triple PhD before applying.

Too many insecure people looking for a stroke on their egos. If you can't figure out that question for yourself then I doubt you have the common sense to make it past the interview. Be an engineer man.

Funny that you should say that...

"...His undergraduate majors at Duke University were in biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and physics with a minor in chemistry. He graduated summa cum laude with election to Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. He held a Goldwater scholarship..."

Just a glimpse, this guy is crazy, full bio at http://www.pdsoros.org/current_fellows/index.cfm/yr/2008#hwang

Now you're just being a masochist.

They forgot to mention his major in virginity.
