Wow, I just wrote up a long post and the forum ate it and here I go again:

Hello everyone,

What a helpful forum! I have been scouring the forum for a bit now; although I have found similar threads, I think I'll need advice based on my situation to help me make up my mind.

I am a UC berkeley Electrical Engi graduate. I completed my lower coursework at a CommunityCollege. My CC gpa is 3.93(70units) and my UC berkeley GPA is 3.07(69 units). I have 0 experience hours. I still need to complete BIO, O-CHEM and BIOCHEM.

I feel empty (like I didn't learn much, not empty in the tank) after my bachelors and am considering the MD path.

I am not sure if MD is the path I want, but I would like these questions answered so that I could make a better decision.

1) What will I need to do to have a very strong chance of making it in a US school?
2) If Caribbean is the only option what is recommended in that scenario?
If I do decide, should I take the remaining reqs at UCberkeley or CC?

I do not have any rec letters (am trying to get one from one of the A's I received). Most of my grades were B level, few A-. Only 1 A at UC berkeley. I could get a few from my CC instructors, but not sure if addcom would value them.

Currently unemployed, but do have some engineering internship exp.
Please describe the shorforms you use. I spent 2 days to understand what SMP stood for. If there is a list of commonly used shortforms here, i'd love to have a link.

Thanks for the help!

PS: I didn't meant to put the sad face in the post. Not depressed, lol

Hi EE,
You're right, this is a good forum! I wish you luck in trying to decide...it's a hard and personal decision.

1- It sounds like your overall GPA would be ~ a 3.5, which is definitely doable but not "strong chance of making it into US school", as you said you would like. The fact that its so much lower at Berkeley might be looked down upon, too. Your MCATs will count for a lot, so doing really really well on them is important.

2- don't know anything about Caribbean other than that I think there's a forum here for questions specific to that.

3- If you took remaining prereqs at UC Berkeley AND did well in them, I think it would look great. But you'd really HAVE to do As, most likely.

The other thing to consider is that Cali is even more super-competitive than the rest of the US for med admissions...so your numbers may need to be even higher.

Are there premed advisers at UC who might be helpful? Or would they be more likely to be negative? Not sure about what you might encounter there, but it might be worth taking a shot ...

Again - good luck!
