Hi there,
I am a 4th year med student from a Caribbean medical school and I wish to apply to Anesthesiology. My step 1 score was pretty miserable at 86 and my step 2 score was a 99. I am a US citizen from NY, so I plan on applying to the majority of NY anesthesiology programs. I was hoping to hear some advice from my fellow SDN members about my chances and recommendations for anesthesiology residencies in other states. NY isn't my #1 choice, so I'm totally flexible. I appreciate any help you can offer.
Kindly,
KS

Step one, post on a public forum under your real name. That way, your name gets out there and really creates a buzz. Soon, you will have programs contacting you instead of the other way around.

Ronak is my real name.

Sorry. Sometimes my sarcasm is so dry that it gets misunderstood. My point was quite the opposite. Never post on a public forum with your real name. This is high stakes and you don't need your career undermined by a stupid post on a public forum.

Or alternatively, just behave on the forum like you would in the workplace and you don't have to worry about it. I think most people if they hang around long enough give out enough info to identify themselves if someone was really trying.

That said, I agree it's not a great idea to have one of your first posts containing a significant amount of personal info in one shot.

To the OP, all you can do is apply broadly and hope for the best. Your Step 2 will help with the Step 1, but it's not going to be easy. Best of luck.

Dear Borat,
If you got the $$$, (and being from a Carib school I'll bet you do), apply to all of them. Or at least most of them. There's more than 100 programs - you should definitely do like 50-60+. Being from a Caribbean school and having a subaverage Step 1 will hurt you. Nonetheless, there are programs that will interview you, and will rank you highly enough to get in. The way to find them is to apply to many, many programs. Best of luck, and try to keep the rest of your private, personal info PRIVATE.

Duly noted...thank you for the advice everyone. Sorry, had thought it's better to be honest but I understand what you mean. Thank you all!
