I am currently completing a preliminary year in internal medicine. I am planning on going through the Match again this year, and was wondering whether I would be eligible for a 4 year categorical position.

I believe you can do a categorical derm position, you would just have to redo the intern year that's part of the categorical. You can't say, oh I've gotten credit for my prelim, I'll come back next year when derm training starts.

Thank you for the reply. I was concerned that there might be a funding issue. I had heard that many programs do not funding or flexibility to take on residents who have previously completed residency. I really do not understand how all of that works.

I think it's different if it's a 1 year prelim in which the contract is only for 1 year vs. say having completed an IM or Peds residency. Some institutions can eat up the cost of a prior completed residency, and others can't.

I suggest emailing the program coordinators directly about this issue. There are not that many categorical programs so it's quite doable. Good luck!!!
