This is is question from destroyer.
Why does the base take hydrogen from the carbond next to the methyl group? Isn't there less steric hindrance if you take hydrogen from the carbon that is on the left side of the chloride? I think the base here is pretty bulky because it has two carbons and a oxygen.

C2H5O- is not a bulky base. It is just an ethyl group attached to an oxygen. Are you mistaking it for tBuOK?
