What are the elite psychiatry residency programs in the country, and in the midwest specifically?

there has been much previous discussion on this board in terms of nationally elite programs. no one can really agree. if you do a search for "top programs" on here or something like that, i'm sure you will find something. as for the midwest, the northern midwest has all the gems. mayo is probably the best. wash u in st. louis. i've heard iowa is pretty good. both schools in wisconsin are pretty decent. some schools in chicago are good too... i think northwestern (?) also, ohio state is supposedly good. take this all with a grain of salt. i am just a med student and i'm not even from that part of the country. anyway, i hope that helped.

"Elite" comes and goes and is generally a "flavor of the month" depending on the psychiatric culture of the times. Your US News Top 10 is probably the general impression of who's "elite" at the moment, though they may end up ultimately not being the places where you best fit in.

Mayo is a good program, but not really an "elite" psychiatry training program.
Wash U and Iowa have well-known research emphases, but have weaknesses in other areas.
Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Ohio St, Michigan, Louisville, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Kansas probably all deserve a look. Beyond that there are many very good community programs in the Midwest that will train you well and prepare you for a great career.

Do the USNWR hospital rankings work like med school rankings? In other words, Mass Gen is at the top of the list, so does that mean it has the most research money? If not, is there a recent listing somewhere of top research-oriented programs (however that is defined)?

a) basically yes
b) research $ + "name recognition"/reputation
c) nothing more reliable than the old advice to "follow the [research] money".

Thanks. Nice to know that I don't have to learn a whole new ranking system when applying for residency.

On a complete tangent, you must be a Monty Python fan. The Norwegian Blue skit is one of my favorites after "The Argument Clinic." 🙂

Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Ohio St, Michigan, Louisville, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Kansas probably all deserve a look. Beyond that there are many very good community programs in the Midwest that will train you well and prepare you for a great career.

OPD's list is excellent. Michigan and Pitt and Wash U are probably the most "important" programs in the Midwest, with Iowa and Cincinnati deserving strong consideration for inclusion in that category as well. Cincy may have the most dynamic emphasis of the five, while Iowa and Wash U are famously known for their lack of therapy emphasis. Pitt and Michigan are somewhere in between, although each has a large enough therapeutic community where you can get whatever you want with a little personal motivation.

I have nice things to say about Louisville and Wisconsin and Northwestern as well, while I think if you wanted to be in Chicago, you should check out UIC too. Minnesota and Kansas I know little about, but heard generally positive things, about MN especially. Although Kentucky doesn't do much research, it may be worth exploring as well.
