I think AI will definitely have an increasingly more prominent role in medicine, but I really cannot see AI overtaking medicine in any sort of near future. Even if it has the capabilities to function as a physician, neither myself nor nobody I know has an interest in seeing a robot vs a human physician, especially if there's a major medical concern. AI can have access to all the information in the world, but it lacks the intuition and creativity that define human-driven medical success. There are also a ton of legal challenges to wrestle with, especially in surgery: if an AI program/robot screws up, who is to blame? As someone who will start med school next year, I at least have no qualms with my chosen career path - I just can't see (in the foreseeable future) enough of the population willing to make that transition that will render human physicians useless. That's just my opinion!
