Hi All.
I like EM a lot. I also find psych very interesting but don't know if I can do that everyday. My problem with ER is that I want to work 9-5. I know that in EM I will have to work nights, weekends, holidays when I am a resident. Can that change after residency? I have heard that many groups have a person who likes nights, a person who likes weekends, etc and that you can pretty much pick your own schedule when your residency is over. Is that true? I like the procedures, the fact that there is NO ROUNDING and NO CALL, and no one can complain about the money...but is it worth my nights and weekends?
Thanks

Almost every group demands that you work some nights and weekends. Many do have people that favor them so if you don't want to work many you may not have to. There are some groups that say that once you have been there for "a certain amount of time" you can pick your schedule. Be very careful about those. Often that means that they sucker in young docs and make them work all the nights and weekends for years while the senior docs take the cushy shifts. The flip side is that they'll tell you that that means you won't have to work nights as an older person which is supposed to be harder.

I have a question about nights. I am doing my EM elective right now and I totally love it, but the nights are killing me. Do EM residents/attendings eventually "get used" to nights, or is it just something we have to deal with? I am totally interested in applying to EM, and I don't mind working weekends/holidays, but it is the nights that I just don't know if I would be able to handle doing for the rest of my career. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think generally you do get used to nights. When I was a student nights would make me violently ill, vomiting and everything. Now I have no problem with it - I don't know what it is. Bottom line - most people adapt. Exactly what types of trouble are you having?

I love the night life! I really enjoy night shifts for some reason...and I dont think i would mind working nights like 6 months straight and switching to days...do any places offer scheduling like that? Also is there any financial incentives given to those who are willing work nights?

thanks!!

I think I would like urgent care! From what I hear, you make a lot less in that environment but the hours are more consistent. Do most people contract into UC or do they just wprk when they feel like it?
Thanks

Would you? Seeing runny noses, back pain and the occasional "funny rash" gets old really quickly. The things that attract most people to EM (acuity, diversity, procedures) are largely lacking.
