EM Externship question

Hi all,

Does anyone know when emergency medicine externship rotations start to fill up? I'm hoping to get some informal time in the ER this spring (I'm a third year) before deciding on my externship plans...theoretically, EM is high up there on my list of career possibilities, but since my school doesn't do an EM rotation until 4th year, I'm not entirely sure. That said, if I like EM, I'd need to do two different EM externships before getting in my residency applications in order to get some LoRs...

I applied at the middle/end of April for an August away rotation in EM. That said, that was the earliest application I sent out. You have to go through VSAS for the majority of your applications, and most of the programs on VSAS don't even begin accepting applications until the middle/end of May. When they fill up, I don't know, but I'd imagine you'll have had your EM experience by May 1st.

As for doing 2 away's just for SLORs... you can certainly do that, and a lot of people do, but it isn't a requirement (provided you're able to get 2 more LORs in addition to your home and away SLORs).
