EM in CA, summer question

I'm an MS-I interested in going back to CA for my residency and I've decided to spend my summer vacation doing absolutely nothing. Is this a bad idea? Should I try and do some research or something? I hear/read that going back to CA for EM is pretty competitive these days and I don't want to mess up my chances. I really want to go back to Cali.
