I am interested in doing an EM residency in NYC. Does anyone have any advice or pros/cons on the various programs in the area? Thanks!

First, try searching the EM forum for "New York City". This topic has been addressed several times.

If you count Newark-Beth Israel, there are 15 programs in and around NYC (LIJ and North Shore are nearby - you could theoretically even extend to Morristown, Stony Brook, and the Connecticut programs (Yale and UConn)).

I hate when people reply like this.........

there are people that are new to this forum and they will ask questions that have been seen by people who have browsed these forums times b4 but there are also people who will reply to the questions who never have b4 so that these topics are ever changing........

The point being if you're not going to answer his question why reply at all?

(and I know of no one who considers newark/stony brook or yale?!?!?! NYC programs)

That being said......I'll tell you about the program I know

Jacobi/Montie--Excellent program considered one of the best in the city. Jacobi is a big county hospital with tons of trauma for one to gets their hands upon. A plethora of pentrating injuries (stab/gunshot wounds) and the ability to run the traumas as you move up in seniority (graduated responsibility).........Jacobi currently is an old outdated drab hospital however the new hospital opens in '04 with a brand new ER to boot.....Montie does not get the trauma that Jacobi gets however it is busier and the patients you will see will run the gamut of non-tramatic emergencies........you will learn your medicine well there.......

Hey, why so abusive? If you look, COMMONLY, people EVERYWHERE advise people to search. This topic has been addressed before (like here and here).

And, I said THEORETICALLY. Moreover, unlike you, I DO know people that lump Newark into the NYC category.

Finally, all these places do indeed fall in the New York metro area.

Oh wait, one more point - I can tell you something about EVERY program in NYC. To the OP (original poster), if this person hasn't been here "b4"), if you have questions on certain programs, PM (private message) me.

Actually, I'll have to agree with Apollyon here. I think ones search should definitely begin with just that....a broad search. I mean, clearly, if you have searched the site previously (or at all) then you would certainly have more specific questions designed for clarification. I feel this site is an excellent resource for applying to EM residencies, and learning specifics about a variety of programs. Unfortunately, many people don't take the time to research their topics, they just want someone to regurgitate information over, and over, and over...

snurok,

I highly suggest that you just do a search here, and pulling up specific programs on AAMC Freida-Online. There's no way you can go wrong. You'll be surprised at the amt of knowledge you can gain immediately, as opposed to posting and waiting for someone to answer your question completely. I am not telling you to do this in order to avoid answering your question, because there's no way I can tell you everything I've learned here without pointing you in that direction directly. Best of luck....

Hey, I know this might not quite be on topic but how to do you go about setting up housing in NYC/Long Island for a month rotation? I am afraid that the cost alone will prevent me from doing a rotation there in November.

Go to SAEM, look under the residency section.

NYC is a big 4 year program city, if you want that then you're in the right place. If not, probably the best 3 year program there is St.Lukes-Roosevelt.

check it out on the web.

Not sure about other programs, but I rotated at Beth Israel last year and I know they offered student housing... I think it was about $100/wk. I stayed with family, so I'm not positive about the cost. Good luck! 😎

Hey guys!

Does anybody know anything useful about the new Cornell/Columbia EM program? good teaching? good program?are residents happy there? what's it all about? I was told that it's a wild card since it's new and has not graduated any residents yet...

And, Mountebank, where did you end up? St. Lukes? how is it going?

I really appreciate any info! Thanks in advance and for all the posted info!

cheers and best wishes,
see ya in NYC,

inka
