EM residency for a DO (and steak talk)

(1) How difficult is it for a DO to get an osteopathic EM residecy? And is it that much different than an allopathic residency?
(2) How difficult is it for a DO to get an allopathic EM residency? I was told that it is very difficult for fmg's but are the chances better for a DO?
(3) After completing an EM residency, are DO's able to find jobs or do hospitals only want MD's?

1) Not very.
1b) Yes, very (IMHO)
2) Somewhat difficult.
2b) Correct.
3) Yes, no.

MD residencies have more checks and balances regarding quality control...simply better organized. There are some very good DO EM residencies, probably about 1/3 of those accredited through the AOA ... I won't name names.

I would suggest rotating at a DO EM residency if you are truly interested in pursuing an osteopathic EM point of view with Emergency Medicine, but be aware that 8% of all EM residents at allopathic residencies are DOs. It is difficult (i.e. I didn't get offers at Cincinatti, Christiana, Pitt) but not impossible (got offers at OSU, UMD, UFL, CWRU, MCW, Indiana etc).

anyone have an advice for a DO student trying to match at an EM residency in California? I am aware that UCLA/UCSD have traditionally not taken DO students, but has anyone heard anything about USC, Kern County, etc? Also, about the quality of the programs?

Can't comment on much, but you could try the websites (www.saem.org) and see if there are any current DOs. You could also try www.emramatch.org and see, there is some information on each program (that submitted info anyways) on the # of DOs. No problem with trying to be the first DO in the program!

(I was the first DO at USF's EM program).

Never been to a Ruth's Chris I didnt' like. Their creamed spinach is top notch. And who can fault a place for searing their steak in butter??!?!

Fleming's is an amazing steak, but nothing tops Smith & Wollensky's in NY city. The best steak and service I have ever had.

Yah know, I went to a Smith and Wollensky's... granted it was in Vegas, but it was ok. I would say probably on par with Morton's. The thing about steak houses, (IMHO), is that they are extremely variable, even within the same restaurant. Example:

Jackson's Steakhouse, in Ft. Lauderdale, (usually top 10 on those independent steak firms' lists), apparently owned in part by Burt Reynolds, had the BEST steak I've ever had in my entire life about 4 years ago. Buttery, melted in your mouth, seared to perfection... kind of like that chocolate cake the Merovingian gave that blonde in Matrix Reloaded. Anywyas, went back during graduation, and it was nasty. Same steak, but big difference. It tasted like an Outback steak (which is good, but nothign special). Very disappointed.

Personally, am a big fan of Sullivan's Steakhouse, myself. (You may find one in Raleigh, NC, as well as various other random cities across America.) Not only for the excellent steaks, but also for the escargot, the onion rings (which are ridiculously good), and the creme brulee (which was the model dessert for the Merovingian's orgasmo-cake program, I believe).

Haven't heard of Sullivan's but most definately will try one next time I see them. A man (woman?) of good taste you are, as evident by your love of escargot. Escargot is likely the best appetizer known to man (second only to the newest appetizer that all restaurants have, seared ahi tuna).

coleman, i respect what you've done for this forum and i'm sure you're a delightful person in real life, but i can't agree with your choice of smith and wollensky's. my experience in chicago was bad, but my s&w experience in nyc was just brutal. what an overpriced, lousy piece of ****. in fact, there is no great steak in nyc. i've been to all the notables there except MJ's and the strip house and I don't see them being any better than Peter Luger's, Palm, Spark's, etc. which are average steakhouses at best imo.

I have read a lot recently about AOA membership meaning a lot to EM residencies. However, I noticed on the AOA website that no DO schools have chapters. How does this affect DO students when we do not even have the chance of being a member? I read from other posts that other students felt that the AOA membership was one of the most important things!
 
Most programs know that DO's arent eligible, and I think they take this into consideration. It isnt a negative so much as it isnt a positive (it isnt a negative if an allopath doesnt have AOA, it just aint a positive either).
 
well group, I appreciate the input. I will not lie and say my choice is based on a wide experience, only S&W, Morton's and Flemings. Seeing some of these other restaurants listed, I do need to get out to some other places and check them out.

Now, I totally agree that location, and even day of the week, may affect the quality of the steak. I've been to s&w's in Chicago and never went back. When I went in New York, it was a friday night about 4 years ago with my wife on our anniversary. It was an amazing piece of meat that night my friend, too perfect for words so I will leave it at that. I have not returned since then, maybe to preserve the memory, maybe for lack of funds, likely for both reasons. Regardless, that stands as my best yet, but given a few more years and an increase in my personal GDP I will broaden my exposure and re-evaluate the "my best steak" claim.

I've also heard great things about Sullivan's, that may be my first stop.

My suggestion, Coleman-Carnivore, is to never EVER go back. The same happened to me at Jackson's steak house in Ft. Lauderdale (not a franchise). Four years ago I had the penultimate steak. Went back for med school graduation and it tasted like a damn Swanson's Salsbury Steak TV dinner. Oh the humanity.

Has anyone been to Palm Restaurant? They're a pretty big chain, started up in NY I guess... there's one in DC and one here in Tampa (I'm sure its around most major cities). I've been there several times, (5-10), mainly due to drug reps who let us order off the menu, and I've never been impressed with their steak... yet the place is always packed. I've tried their salmon and chicken and its ok... I would rate it a B-.

i've been to the palm (theater district) and palm too (east side) in nyc. palm too is a joke. the original palm offered the best piece of steak i've had in nyc (only in new york however). i give it a B+ for steak. the place is sterile however and needs some character.
 
Someone made the statement that of the AOA approved emergency programs, only 1/3 are actually worth going to. I was wondering what some of the "good" DO emergency programs are?

If I remember correctly, the ERAS application field for AOA membership has an available response "No chapter at my school", which would apply to all osteopathic schools.

Some of the good DO ER residencies off the top of my head are Genesys in Grand Blanc, MI (not that Grand a city), the dual-accredited MSU program in E. Lansing, MI (sweet college town), and Barnabas in the Bronx (level I trauma, good dept layout).

As for the rest of you hosers, quit you *****-willow whining. Come on over to my house, I'll get a couple of big ol' Hereford NY Strips from the Fresh Market, and we'll grill up the best damn steaks you ever had. Grilled veggies on the side and a cold beer in your left hand should keep you quiet for a few minutes. :clap:
