I'm a dual US/Canadian citizen aiming for an EM residency and a Canadian practice. I know that doing a 3 or 4 year EM residency in the US will not be seen as equivalent to the 5 year Canadian residency (without the extra year(s) to total five).

But if I wanted to go for a US 3 year EM (instead of the FM +1 in Canada), how will I be perceived in the Canadian EM job search? Will I have access to all the available jobs (I know some of the big deal trauma jobs require the 5 year)? Will I be seen as more desirable than an FM +1 for the majority of jobs?

One thing I would check and see if you can gain Canadian qualifications like the CCFP (family practice). Not all provinces recognize the US board qualifications as equivalent so gaining a medical license may be difficult. Obtaining the CCFP certification may require certain mandatory rotations that maybe difficult to obtain in a more ER based residency.

If you can't get the CCFP make sure you check with the province in which you want to work to find out their medical licensing requirements. For example is it just one year of internship with mandatory rotations in certain things like peds, psych, surg... or do you need your CCFP or FRCPC before you can get a medical license?
