Hello,
I'm only a first year osteo student, but am pretty much set on EM. I have worked in a lvl I trauma ED for 6 yrs and am hooked. I would appreciate any insight to EM programs you would reccomend in the OH, KY, and IN areas. If someone had any insight to Grandview in Dayton, OH I would much appreciate it too. Yes, I am going osteo, but I would appreciate your advice on programs in my aforementioned states...thanks for your time. I know how valuable it is!

Do a search on Osteo ER programs. Dayton lost its trauma a few years back to the 2 larger hospitals in town. If I were you I wouldn't do it. It has a low volume and no trauma. You need to be VERY careful if you are going osteo ER. The quality of training varies from program to program. Look up in Michigan if interested in DO progs. The Dual accredited ones are usually good too.

Amen.

if you don't want to go to michigan, then i would agree to do a dually-accredited program. some of the ones i have looked into in other places were not so good, or changed hospitals a thousand times!! I am sure there are a few good ones out there, just not in areas that I wanted to live unfortunately. don't close your options to just the osteo programs

Thanks folks for all your feed back....

any opinion on doctor's hospital in columbus, oh...i heard they are high volume w/ trauma, but i've heard rumors that they are a poor teaching facility...thanks!

Doctors is unfortunately not a level 1 trauma center so I don't know what kind of action you'll see there. Grant (another OhioHealth Hospital) is a level 1 but it doesn't have an ER residency. I do know their FP residents do a ton of trauma as MedFlight is based out of Grant (with OSU) and there is a trauma surgery fellowship is also at Grant. In Columbus, I'd try OSU or Riverside (both allo programs).

Good luck!

Riverside has an ER residency? I dont believe that info is correct. I worked there as a tech for a year or so before they built the glorious brand new high tech ER they have now. Still only a level 2 trauma center. I dont think they have a ER Residency Program. Website for OHIOHEALTH/RMH shows only Family practice, Internal medicine, Preliminary medicine, Transitional year, Obstetrics & gynecology, Preliminary surgery, and General surgery.

Doctor's and OSU are the only 2 ER residencies in Columbus. OSU being allo and Doctor's being osteo. Grant and OSU are the 2 level one trauma centers... OSU being the official burn center. Doctor's is a busy community ER. The Doctor's Residents also rotate at Grant Medical Center which sees plenty of trauma. I am not sure how many months they spend there. I believe, if you do a rotation at Doctor's as a student, they send you over to Grant for a couple shifts.

I did a FP month at Doctor's. I wasnt impressed with their didactics for the students overall, but I did not go to the EM didactic sessions, so it may be different. Many people rave about the ER program at Doctor's. In 2004, Doctor's did not fill their ER spots from the match. Not sure if they scrambled the rest of the class or not. As far as OSU, I have heard of DO applicants interviewing there, but to my knowledge, there are no DO residents in their EM program.

I agree with those above stating to be careful about DO EM programs. Rotate at both and make your own judgement. There are some GREAT osteopathic EM residencies out there with excellent reputations, but there are some really crappy ones as well. The allopathic programs appear to be much more tightly regulated and more stable. Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

...I'm currently a PGY-2 in the osteopathic program at Midwestern university here in Chicago and have no regrets about choosing the program. We're a Trauma level one center and we do our trauma rotations here and at Cook County Hospital. You can e-mail me directly at [email protected] if you have more questions. When you are a MS-3, 4 do some EM rotations at some osteo & allo programs - hopefully by that time you would know the kind of EM residency you want to end up in. ALL the residencies are going to have weak and strong points, it would be up to you to decide which program suits your goals. Unfortunately i do not know much about the osteo residencies in MI, OH. I'll make it a point to meet with the PD's of all the osteo Em programs during the AOA convention in Orlando this fall. Anyways, good luck...

Thanks folks,
I am limited to the mid west, and hoped to stay in an osteo school. I knew in the future I may practice in PA. I've heard PA is a stat which requires DO's to grad from an AOA program. However, from what I'm seeing from the feed back my best bet is pause till post rotations, and if I go allo to push for AOA approval....

Thank you,
jim!

If you look at OSU's resident list, they do have a couple of DO's. One of our local EP's is a DO and did her residency at OSU and worked at Grant for several years.

St. Vincent's in Toledo has some sort of osteopathic affiliation and about half of their residents are DO's. I don't know if they are a dual program or not.
