i have my EM audition rotations, 3 of them (want to maximize my chances of matching) in the next upcoming months. But that means so far, i only have non-EM lors.. i'm applying sept 1st - do i just send out the letters once i get them? wouldnt it be too late? what months does EM interview? thanks!

All I know is that you calling them auditions stressed me out 😱

Oh, I think you just send them out once you get them. ERAS is designed so that you can progressively add stuff... well at least some stuff, at least

I might have this wrong, but I think you can put letters in ERAS until Nov 1.
Not sure what happens after that date.

But don't people often do away rotations in late Oct/Nov? In that case the SLOR wouldn't be ready until after Nov 1st... Where did you hear this?

This could get interesting. The blind leading the blind.

I'll bite. I understand it to be that you only have to have entered whom the letter will be from if you will be doing an away around the time that the app must be "complete". However, the SLOR must get turned in.

The info I spoke of came from someone I talked to at Irvine.

So it seems that you can submit your portion of the application whenever it is ready (you can't update this part once submitted, right??) starting September 1st. But then from whenever you submit, until Nov 1st, your letters of rec (SLORs included) can come in, be added to your file, and sent wherever you want. If you're doing an away rotation that extends beyond Nov 1st, you need to include that you expect a letter somehow before Nov 1st.

Then to the OP, just submit your app on sept 1st and let your letters trickle in.

Anyone know if interview invites or programs will start looking at our apps before all our letters are in? I'm planning on submitting ERAS September 1st but might have some SLORs trickling in during September (hopefully not into October...but who knows!)

I second this question.

Definitely. Or maybe. Or not at all. Or....

As tkim points out, every program is different. You get (and upload) your letters when you can and let the chips fall where they may.

If you have some sort of magical LOR generating power, you should use it early and often. But most MS4s don't have that. You can't control everything...don't bother trying.

I got a bunch of early interview invites (before my last SLOR came in and before the dean's letter was released) and I then I got a bunch more after Nov. 1. It all depends on the programs.

Most of my invites didn't come until my application was complete and in November. However, some do offer in October and without complete applications. It does seem to depend on how badly the program wants applicants and how badly they want you. I would do my best to get all 3 as early as possible.

A spin off question - how do you proceed with one (or all of your letter writers) not getting a SLOR in on time? I met with two of mine back in June, didn't see anything uploaded on ERAS yet, sent them both a follow up email 1.5 weeks ago, and still haven't seen anything yet. I know it's way too early, but what should my next action be if they're still not uploaded by the first week of Sept? Is it appropriate to email again, or should I go in an talk to them?

Another spin off question about SLORs.

I am a DO student interested in both allo and osteo matches. At my school we have tracks for our rotations and I got a track that gave me an elective in July, core EM this month, followed by three months of IM and then one more elective in EM in Dec. In July I did an EM rotation got a SLOR. This month I am at a core site, but my program director is not at the site and won't write me a letter, so I am trying to get a SLOR from the clinical coordinator at the site who is somewhat involved in the program. My second or third SLOR (depending on what I can get this month) won't come until Dec (which is pretty late). I might have two SLORs by Sept 1st, but one is from a DO program and not from the program director. I can get another SLOR in Dec but it might be too late at that point to help me out anywhere other than the site I rotated at in Dec. The PD at my July site said he really recommends two SLORs in by Sept. I have taken both USMLE and COMLEX, did decent, have decent grades. July's rotation went well, we will see if its honors level work in a few weeks. Am I screwed having my second SLOR come from DO program and not from the PD?? Will that dramatically decrease the interviews I may receive? Really hoping on staying in Chicago. Thanks
